Found the commentary on Europe limited. Surely it ought to have acknowledged the role of Islam in South East Europe and Spain. Further the influence of orthodoxy in Eastern Europe. Had the Caroligian empire but not the Byzantine.l
Will this be another 'european' history that is very 'western' european.

It's really fascinating how each term ("Early", "Modern", and "Europe") encompasses much more than its surface value. I never thought this class would be making so many connections to things that otherwise seem independent of each other. Thanks for explaining everything so thoroughly and being so enthusiastic about this class. I'm excited!!

I'm only a student, but I think you take some steps outside Early Modernity into later modernity. The solidified concept of the individual, the faith in science to the exclusion of religion and "spiritual explanation" for example, seem to me to be later modern ideas. A lot of experimental scientists in this period were also magicians and occult practioners. Also the notion of Divine Right was precisely solidified in the hands of Protestant political thinkers and their Paulian/Augustinian view of secular authority. Divine Right in the Middle Ages was a confused half-formed concept, and in practice the king shared power with the landed nobility. It is only in the Late Middle Ages and during Early Modernity that kings centralized power in their hands, empowered a bureaucratic class of unlanded merchants that was beholden to them and destroyed the rights of the ancient nobility, and this continues right up to the French Revolution and the European Spring, at the end of the Early Modern period.
