I've got a $300 2011 used MacBook Pro for college/highschool. 4 gb ram. I upgraded it to an 8 with core i7. Works great. Ports are the best, no need to carry a hub!

The graphics chip can't get hot enough for the solder to melt. I know this graphics issue is a common problem, but it's not desoldering itself. Solder's melting point is about 188C, and the graphics card would start thermal throttling at about 100. I'd think the machine would shut itself down at about 120.

same issue happened to me. I had an old white MacBook from 06 laying around. took a capacitor from that board and replaced the C9560 with a heat gun and it works like it did before!! I upped it from a tiny 330uf to a 490uf capacitor so this issue doesn't happen again. I don't believe the GPU comes unsoldered cause thats some tough stuff they use on those boards. I believe that was just an excuse that apple used cause they couldn't figure out the problem or didn't want people knowing about a fix thats literally too cheap to charge for. the heat does give some life to the C9560 capacitor but y till it cools down.

Have a technician to just remove the resistor that powers up the Radeon GPU from the board. 10$ permanent fix.

Bought my 2011 brand new and I had this fucking thing quit on me three times ... 2 times while under warranty and the 3rd out of warranty ... I super agree with you ... its a piece and it is not to be used as a daily driver .... I currently have a iMac 27in 2017 and with the loan I got to get .. I had $500-$600 bucks left over to get this fix ...

The dilemma as you have mention is, I dont NEARLY use this thing as much anymore because of the over heating issues which causes the motherboard to fail and/or the GPU ... Its useful when I need to travel with it for video editing and dumping stuff off the camera but not worth the risk of daily driving this thing any more ... its sad and frustating ... I was also told its was too old to fix when I had it done again ... im like, but you guys are giving me a work around ... you are just delyaing the inevitable ... $2500 machine in 2011 reduced uselessness 6-7 years later .. and its not because its not capable of handing such things like editing ...its simply because of what will happen if you do put it in full rotation

Watching this on a 13 inch MacBook Pro Early 2011.

Would the 2012 model have this issue? There's a big price jump between a 2011 and 2012, possibly because of this issue plus Catalina support.

the oven method works its a temporary fix

It was not due to the chip loosing connection to the board. It was due to the chip being a bad chip. The heat from the oven causes the inside of the chip ( GPU ) the electrons or what ever is inside the chip itself to flow again. It's kinda like wakes up whatever is inside the chip itself. It's not anything to do with the chip loosing connection with the board.
Yes I'm very sad because one of my MacBooks is now dead again from this gpu issue.
I have to just buy something newer

I bought 2012 macbook pro with ram issue. To fix the issue only install one stick of ram. Solve it with that. Anyhow, get you a new macbook or just buy a Windows laptop with SSD/ram that is upgradable

man my 2011 has run insanely well, I've dropped this thing a bunch of times and it still works very well. I plan to run this till it dies and I can't repair it anymore.
