What I'm hearing is, "as soon as other products drop you can get a used steam deck real cheap"

When your competitor is 2-3x the price, it's not a competitor

Nothing can beat the price of the Steam Deck. It's not "obsolete" just because a company can beat it in performance at 2-4x the price.

"steam deck killer" won't happen unless they can give the same support and price point valve is giving. Valve wants to get the deck into as many hands as they can and supply an awesome experience. Even to the point of making people feel like they can fix their own system.

I'll support valve anyday for them doing a lot of things right.

it's kind of funny when these benchmarks come out and you realize they are running at 35W and not 15W.... and in terms of the Steam Deck it's most efficient at 10W. So even if there are better performing hardware out there, they really need to substantially improve performance/watt. not "just" the performance side of things.

It's not about being obsolete or not, it's custom hardware which can make developers optimize the games for it plus the steam deck is really cheap as well

It is not bad at all that Valve does not upgrade the steam deck for a while, this will make developers target the current system for a while and make the whole system more valuable for customers long term.

As somone who just plays games casually, being able to get the steam deck for around $650. Its still the perfect thing for me to play games on.

It's not obselete. It's a base setter.
Every game should strive to run at least 30-40 fps on 720p with the lowest settings.
By selling that product, companies are forced to consider the category.
If you want to have more performance, then buy that a handheld for more money.

What these will do however is kill all laptops more expensive than the APU solution and less performance.

forgot to mention that the 780m is working at a much higher TDP.

For the price, I think the steam deck will be just fine.

The deck does pretty much what I want. The options are out there for high end users. Which is cool

They steam deck has a nice interface and lots of games are already optimized for it. There’s a benefit to being a massive, known, single platform. I don’t have to fiddle with settings, and I can still play the games I own. Also, it’s way cheaper and better designed than most other portable pc’s

All of these "Steam Deck killers" cost 2x as much and often much more

Even if valve end up behind, gotta give where credit is due. While they aren't the first company to make handheld console, they are the one that makes others invest into creating handheld console.

I think the steam deck will always hold a marketplace especially as a device with battery life versus the more performant devices that are more for gaming performance

But the real question is: how much power drain does it have?
The steam deck apu is made specifically for performance and battery life balance. Powerful apus arent super new and valve couldve done that, but it wouldve meant the battery would drain super fast.

I mean I knew faster things exist, but I bought it for the low price for its power and I already got my money's worth, I hope things get even better so more people can afford to game aswell.
