You can tell a lot about a car by the way its engine starts at 30 below. That was the average overnight temperature for three consecutive nights during my test-drive of the 2021 Mercedes S 580.

On three separate mornings, after cold-soaking at skin-cracking temperatures for 12 hours or more, I went outside to start its engine — just to see if it would. Almost all new cars start in this situation — they’re designed to — but many don’t sound too happy about it.
