I think it's called a rice 'ball' because it uses rice to wrap around the ingredient and becomes a 'ball' stuffing. Rice ball can come with round shape too it's just triangle shape is easier for it to stand and stay in a place instead of having many rice balls rolling around if earthquake or accident shakes do come up XD

The shapes of "Onigiri/Omusubi (rice ball)" can be anything - triangle, flat & round, "Tawara-gata (tube with round ends like "Tawara/俵, " traditional rice carrier made with rice straws)", or sphere.

Where I live, rice balls are actually just balls of rice with filling. You can’t really find onigiri anywhere apart from proper Japanese/sushi restaurants
