Today on Modern Builds I'm making a simple, modern platform bed frame from simple materials, using simple tools. I used 1x4's for the platform and 2x2's for the frame. No cutting things to width, just length... you could use a miter saw, circular saw, table saw, whatever you want!

If you plan on building this project yourself, make sure and check out the written article linked below for the 3D model with plans and dimensions. If you build it, don't forget to tag me on instagram @modernbuilds

So! My son and I just completed making this bed in one evening. We had been looking at those simple metal platforms you can buy because we wanted storage space under the bed. We decided we would build a simple platform ourselves and came upon these plans. We simply added an additional 3 inches to the 2x2's that we cut for the sides of the platform frames, and extended the center support 2x2's accordingly. We also used the best wood glue on EVERY joint. It's true folks - the screws help hold wood together while the wood glue bonds the two pieces together. Do NOT skip gluing. Once completed, we added stain-and-poly in one. This morning, the frame looks great and is super strong! We used the cheap white lumber from (orange-colored hardware store). Total lumber cost was around $40. We did dig through each size to find the best pieces, but we also liked the small imperfections that added some authenticity to the final look. A great project, easy to tackle and the final look is great!

We love Gary now. You need to show more Gary. You did this to yourself. Great channel. Overbuild with Gary.

Thanks for posting this video along with the cut list, Modern Builds.

I selected this plan specifically because I have a circular saw, but not a table saw. Getting angled cuts to come out constantly with a circular saw is too much of a dice throw. I have built raised beds and cut the molding for my flooring, but have never built furniture.

I appreciate that this is a starter project in that the materials (pine from a local hardware store in MT during COVID where we're experiencing lumber supply shortage) were about $80. This makes the cost of failure super low. However, fails I did not! I built this bed frame solo for my second grade son who has thanked me repeatedly. The first time he learned of my plans he said, "You're going to BUILD my bed frame?!" This is a cool legacy to pass down.

What's up Mike? When you consider that you never put the same sort of pressure on a bed that you were putting on it walking around, it's definitely strong enough. The weight is distributed over a much larger area, especially considering there is a mattress. The bed looks good and has to be cheaper than buying one. It was great getting to hang out last week in the UK. Hope you're recovering. I finally feel normal again.

I will be making this for my daughter's room.  We wanted something sturdy simple.  This is great because no specialty tools are needed.  I can definitely make a straight cut and use a drill.  A lot of the other videos I've seen call for cut angles on every board and I wanted something simple.  Thanks.

I’m addicted to this channel. Your taste is impeccable. I don’t even own power tools, but you have me stashing spare cash to get some. Ha!

Good job! Smart idea using the “command strips” to add a headboard.

Clamp a block to your miter saw fence where you put your mark and your accuracy will be improved

Thanks for the inspiration Mike! I have no tools, and I have never build anything in my life! BUT I’m borrowing the in-law’s power tools and I made a run to the Home Depot to grab some lumber... I’m going to build this bed today... WISH ME LUCK!

YouTube keeps suggesting the candles video to me. Ha ha. The headboard really added a lot. Good idea using the command strips.

I just completed this project- my first ever build! It did not come out anywhere near perfect like yours but that’s expected for my first time. It would be so helpful to beginners if you included more info on your website including a full list of all of the items needed and sizing, a cut list that includes the slats, and a step by step build process— for us beginners :) just my two cents. Thank you for the tutorial!

Thanks for the how-to, Mike. I scaled your design for a queen-sized mattress and just uploaded a short video of it coming together in Fusion 360.
