It's also about arrangement. You can have them playing at the same time but that's still 2 melodies doing the same thing. Counter melody is like a transition effect. You have 4 bars of one melody then maybe 2 bars in u bring ur counter melody in and take out the other melody then bring it back it and harmonize for the chorus. U can do this effect with as many melodies as u want. Just remember it's just as important to arrange them properly

Also this is a very minimal explanation about how to make melodies..
A melody is a journey starting from root going elsewhere and then coming back home, it should have the purpose to express what you are feeling..
It’s more like writing a story it’s not about throwing random notes in key, that would be like throwing random words together and pretend they have a meaning just because in most cases they actually are used together.
Every interval has a meaning.
