Fucking THANK you, this was the problem that was keeping me from being able to pick a size. Gotta have at a glance organization so I know what I forgot to put back when I was done.

4 pack of 20x20 foam floor pad squares from HF is often on sale for $5. 3/4 inch thick. Cuts easily with any exacto,

Don't listen to the snap-on guy. You still need the standards tools. Trucks are coming off the assembly line from the big three and there are still standard bolts on em

Being organized and having easy inventory is the way. I mix a few methods. Foam cut outs like you have is great for some tools. Original cases for some or 3D printed holders for tool sets that came without cases. Sometimes a custom wood box or tray is the most convenient solution. The underlying point is being able to find what you need quickly and having all of your tools accounted for when the job is done.

If you really want to *max out* space:
• Get 1"- 2" foam & some thin backing then cut slots in foam as follows...
-slot most handled tools on edge *not* flat to minimize footprint (wrenches, pliers, etc.)
-stand up small/oblong stuff for minimal footprint (bits, sockets, etc.)
• Once you have all the slots cut out then roll adhesive onto bottom-side of the foam and *glue it* onto the thin backing.. and _voilah!_ you now have *stackable* foam inserts where the tools won't fall through and you can fill boxes to the top‼️

Sidenote- I said 1"-2" foam but this technique can actually work with pretty much *any* thickness foam! I've done from ¾" foam depth (bits, sockets, etc.) all the way up to 6" deep (power tools)
I've also sectioned drawers with different depth inserts, pushed cheap "support rods" into foam to make "rigid inserts", and secured "rope handles" into foam for easy lifting... get creative, it's *very easy* to make modular for cheap 💯👍

Before you even said it, when I saw your drawer I knew already you were an aviation mechanic. Still miss our nice Snap-On tool boxes. Even had shadowed slats that we could stack up in a backpack. Nice setup man.

Found a bunch of used yoga mats at the scrapyard - perfect for this and esp perfect for bench Vice or table clamp pads. I restore Axes and old tools and a piece of yoga mat on the Vice, no marks or scratches! I’m gonna use it in my toolbox today!!!

When I was a process engineer at Spirit / Boeing we did a bunch of this as a lean manufacturing process. If your interested and want ideas look up 5s practices.
Sort, Sweep, Standardize, simplify, and sustainable.
The grey mating he uses looks good. We contrasted the black with a red mat. It really made it obvious if a tool was out of place.
I hate replacing a lost tool. Especially at the cost of tools ⚒️ today!

After a few TBIs tool shadowing is hard af yet the most beneficial thing ever for me.
I lose tools and spend ten minutes looking for em all the while ive been holding it the whole damn time.
I dont think I'll ever wrench on a bird again but im content with tinkering on my truck and motorcycles. I just cant risk creating FOD.

My dad used a metal sheet and spray foam on his old tool box. Put a plastic sheet down and layout your tools once you’ve done that take a can of spray foam and go under the plastic. Make sure to do this quick cause if you don’t put that meta sheet down that foam will just expand upwards and you’ll have to try again.

This is also a nerd trick too. If you put some foam under the toots it quiets them also. The other thing I use to quet my work van is old carpet squares cut to fit the shelving racks.

Use the mats that come in the drawers to cut out the bottom. Far better than dimensioning imo. An aircraft Mech

Strips of double sided carpet tape on the back of the foam will keep it secured to the drawer, preventing it from lifting and moving around.
