Mae West, Born Mary Jane West in Brooklyn in 1893, Mae captivated audiences with her wit, confidence, and unapologetic sexuality. From her scandalous plays like Sex and The Drag to her Hollywood triumphs, Mae blazed a trail for women in entertainment.

In the 1930s, Mae saved Paramount Pictures from bankruptcy with blockbusters like She Done Him Wrong and I’m No Angel—films that also launched the career of an unknown Cary Grant. Her famous quip, "Goodness had nothing to do with it," and her seductive invitation to Grant to "come up and see me sometime," became legendary.

But Mae’s rise wasn’t without controversy. Her bold choices attracted the ire of media mogul William Randolph Hearst, who led a campaign against her films, claiming they corrupted public morals. Undeterred, Mae continued to thrive, even penning her own scripts and creating unforgettable characters like Diamond Lil.

Discover how Mae West redefined Hollywood, challenged censorship, and became one of the most influential women of the 20th century. From her vaudeville beginnings to her enduring legacy, this is the untold story of Mae West.

She was definitely a women before her time. But because she didn't put up with crap, she got black listed for it. Brilliant actress. Great video. Thank you.

Mae West was the BOMB! Sassy, witty, smart as a whip, provocative and daring, she paved the way for women to be unapologetically bold and sexy on film. She wrote her own material and co-wrote the screenplays for some of her most famous films and gave us so many great one liners like "When I'm good, I'm very good. But when I'm bad, I'm better." What a va va voom woman she was!!!

Anyone W.R Hurst disliked had to have done something to improve or advance the human experience. I’ll keep saying the people & organizations that want to ban, block or censor artistic expression have never been on the right side of history. Ms. West pushed back at every opportunity. She was remarkable in every way. Great video as usual ❤

Another remarkable piece on another fascinating person not afraid to stand up to the cynically powerful.

She was one of my heroes. Unashamedly loved life and love and was as smart as a whip. Being that smart put her on the wrong side of a lot of powerful men and she paid the price; but nobody got the better of Mae. She shone bright and brilliantly and long. An icon.

I had no idea that Miss. West was the screenwriter for all of her work. Beauty and brains STILL terrifies wannabe powerful men.

First of all, "thank you, " for this biography on one of my all-time favorite entertainers, Mae West. I've followed her career over the years but you included information that I didn't know. I've always believed Mae West was a woman who was ahead of her time, she was a woman who was determined to make her own contribution to her acting "come hell or come high-water, " period! Great investigation and presentation, as always. Take care 🦋 P.S. I'm still waiting on the Judy Garland biography that was taken down.

She was witty, brave, boundary-pushing, and incredibly funny. A very intelligent woman ahead of her time, who was made for Hollywood.

Mae was one of my favorite actors. She was a powerhouse of a woman. The cameras of Hollywood during her time absolutely loved her, and in every one of her films, she glowed. I had always wondered what happened to her, and now, because of this documentary, I know. So tragic. She had so much more to give the entertainment world. The "Entertainment" industry took so much away from the gorgeous woman. As long as people want to see her films, she will never be forgotten. I never liked R. Hearst, he was a selfish, arrogant, narcissistic man. He's was just like someone we know well. #45! Love you, Mae West!🎉🎉

Mae managed to get a lot of her movie dialogue around the censors. She was NO victim.
