EU Protects: Patrolling the EU’s maritime border

The refugee crisis of 2015-16 stretched the resources of countries such as Greece and Italy, both of which saw huge numbers of desperate people arrive on their shores. The Greek island of Lesbos, for example, needed urgent help in order to register and accommodate the asylum seekers looking for protection. The EU provided assistance to the Greek authorities, patrolling the maritime border and helping life on the island return to some sense of normality.
