The Most Satisfying Pottery Process

How I make a crunchy lid fit perfectly, wait till the end to see, (and more importantly hear), how beautifully the lid spins in place.

Chemico valve grinding paste is the stuff I use to do this, both the coarse, then fine compound, until the groggy stoneware is polished to a glassy smooth finish.

First though, I have to crack the lid off and remove the waddings that supported it throughout the reduction firing. These little white discs are made from 50% kaolin and 50% coarse alumina hydrate and they’re pressed against the waxed underside of the lid before it’s very carefully positioned on the body in such a way that neither component is touching.

It takes time. Especially now I have some 40 pots saved up that need grinding, and I’ll probably spend an entire day working through all of them and then washing the residue away with hot, soapy water. The difference it makes though is colossal, not to mention you can make lids that don’t even fit correctly, fit.

Hello friends — just a quick note to say that these videos are just a really small portion of the content I upload on YouTube. I also upload much longer, narrated videos that go into a TON of depth about the creation process of pottery. These are just small teasers if anything, and if you like these, I hope you'll like my 'proper' videos.

the product is Chemico's valve grinding paste for anyone wondering. it has coarse grit on one end and a fine grit on the other for different refinement.

okay but i would literally go insane from having to not only hear that grinding noise for that long but also from having to FEEL it during the whole process

This specific texture under my nails makes my whole body shiver and I physically have to scrape my nails over a different texture to remove the feeling of how awful it is lol the noise gave me such a visceral response

I'm the opposite of like everyone here. I love the sounds of ceramic and stone grinding. That crunchy, gritty noise is nice (if it's not too loud). But that smooth finish felt NICE.

That grinding sounds just cuts through all my senses and my entire body. I can feel it grating my bones but it’s so much more manageable by the end

You can’t torture me in the first five seconds and then treat me nice the rest like nothing happened, that’s just gaslighting! 😂
