Some backstory
In 1919, as a newly promoted Lt Col, Eisenhower led a military convoy across the US--coast to coast primarily to test trucks being offered to the army AND to test pneumatic tires--the trip was sponsored by Firestone.

Eisenhower was a diligent staff officer who recorded everything and he noted the general lack of uniformity and quality of American roads and bridges.

After VE Day, he spent a month touring Germany, assessing the damage for George Marshall who later used Ike's reports to develop the Marshall Plan.

Eisenhower was truly impressed by the autobahn and immediately recognized its potential to revolutionize the otherwise disjointed American highway system.

Well Neil is right when he said that the modern highway system was (I would say) developed but not invented by the Germans... The principles of the convenience of military highways were invented by the Romans.. more than 2000 years ago, actually Long sections of the German Autobahn are in top of where the Romans highway used to be.
