They needed to get more mobile defensively and more rounded offensively, felt like they were so built toward taking down the nuggets last year that when ant wasn’t on his insane round 1 and part way through round 2 heater and they ran into the mavs, their focus on interior size meant they weren’t built to stop a team filled with spacing surrounding 2 guards proned to operating mid range and out. If this was the nuggets last year or the year before I’d agree that banking on someone else to beat them when you’re the only team built to play them well out west is a bad idea, but the nuggets have atrophied so much that you can focus on being rounded now.

As a Knicks fan, it's far from the worst trade. Juju is tuff as nails and can put up 25 and 10 and Donte is a sniper from 3. I actually think the Knicks got finessed on this trade even though I like KAT

Kat is not a sneaky great defender, he's a defender with extreme strengths and weaknesses. His strengths are his length and agility, his weaknesses are his lack if vertical athleticism, poor rim protection, and poor ability to backpedal and keep smaller players in front of him. He's gotten a lot stronger as he's aged, so hes no longer a guy jokic can just move, and hes huge with long arms and quick feet so he can do a decent job at bothering Jokic. Conversely, he sucks ass at almost everything except guarding in the post and defenses with him at the 5 will never be good. He also does a decent job at guardig kevin durant, who at this point relies mostly on just being taller and shooting over guys and isn't super quick anymore. Guarding one specific player on the other team isn't the only part of defense tho especially in the modern NBA. Kat like many stars is a better 1 on 1 defender than a team defender, and this makes it hard to analyze him for casual fans who don't understand that he can be both good at guarding jokic and a bad OVERALL defender at the same time.

KAT is not a great defender. Period.
Wolves win because of their whole defensive scheme. They let kat to take Jokic, so Gobert can protect the rim and help. This is why Jokic seems to be less effective, he is constantly worried about getting double, and he got no outlet as Gobert is under the rim.
No saying KAT doesn’t do a good job, he did his part, just that his part is not that hard and Randle probably can do that too. Randle is secretly as heavy as KAT, move even faster, he should be able to defend post like KAT.
KAT contract is insanely overpriced. Able to get rid of it, replace it with a much lower paying star Randle, while able to get one of the best performing 3d player Donte is a steal for wolves.
