"May not be historically accurate , we did not know St Patrick so we are kind of guessing Nor have we heard him speak , it was about 1600 years since he was last here in fact., so characters possibly are portrayed incorrectly, also costume, location and spoken word may differ greatly from reality. Racial and cultural stereo types although apparent were not the intention of the director. No snakes were harmed bludgeoned or squished in the making of this film. All perceived double entandre are unintentional and the product of you own imagination."
Fado fado or long long ago to translate for our American friends, in a quaint and quiet Welsh town there arrived an evil slave trader, named Niall of the nine hostages. He burned the town to the ground taking all the young boys of working age captive.
One of these boys was named Patrick.. Patrick was sold to an Irish farmer named Milchu and put to work minding sheep and pigs on a lonely hill. All alone his only family being the animals he sometimes had to eat the pig swill to stay alive. He also found the long lonely nights hard having to sleep with the animals for warmth their grunting often kept him up all night.
Then one night God came to him in a dream and told him there would be a boat waiting for him in Port Láirge or Waterford -- God also spoke Irish fluently but knew not everyone did hence the translation.
So Patrick made his way to the boat but when he arrived the captain would not let him aboard. He said " go away boy go away ! " Patrick pleaded with him but the answer was still the same . " This boat's not for slaves its for spuds!"
The captain tried to set sail to France but ever time a storm blew up nearly sinking the ship and forcing him to return to Waterford where Patrick was still waiting. The captain knew it had something to do with the slave boy . " Boy its all your doing your cursed you are so you are " Patrick said if you take me with you God will calm the storm, so the captain eventually agreed and the journey was nice an calm.
In France Patrick studied for years and years , first becoming a priest then when his hair had turned white giving him an air of authority they made him a bishop. It was then he felt the calling of the Irish people calling to be saved.
So back in Ireland Patrick lit a big fire on a hill to keep warm, people saw it from all round it was an Irish custom for the King to light the first fire on this particular evening owing to some pagan festival that was taking place that very day. This nearly got Patrick in trouble but his words were infused with the spirit and King nor commoner could outwit him because God was on his side.
In time all his people got to know god at the beginning people did not get him it probably was the french accent. So one day while finding the crowd particularly hard to convert he used the shamrock to explain the three people in one god trinity . He said " see this shamrock it comes from one stem but has three leafs just like god has three manifestations the father the son and the holy ghost" and do you know the crowd understood . This is why the shamrock is the symbol of Ireland. The crowds asked loads more questions and do you know not all of them were stupid.
The very same day he explained that god was in everything even the rocks has the holy spirit , some creatures like snakes dont have the holy spirit !
He was using the snake as a metaphor for the devil like in the Bible but the Irish took him way too literally and used the rocks to smash the devil out the snakes .
The Natives put their nose to the grind stone shoulder to the wheel and within three months every snake from Malin head to Mizen head was dead.
And that is how saint Patrick banished all the snakes from Ireland.
