What is dissociation?

Ever wonder what dissociation is? Or what causes it? I know that I receive a ton of questions about dissociation, it's causes, and why we have to stop if it's helping. I cover all this and more in today's short. I also have more videos on the topic if you want a deeper dive.

What's the difference between dissociation, zoning out and hyperfocusing?

More please. 2020 was a very stressful moment of time. I feel like it didn’t happen. Pretty sure I’m a bit dissociated.

Can you do a full video on dissociation and how to treat it?

Girl PLEASE can you do a deep dive on dissociative seizures?! I didn’t know they existed until I was seeing a specialist for them and my life got turned upside down! There’s so little information it would be amazing to see you talk about it. They’re also known as non epileptic attacks!!

I’d like to know more. I think the fact that you used the word “spectrum” is important Because I’ve experienced several different degrees or levels of dissociation and I continue to under high stress situations. Other symptoms including tunnel vision and a sense things are not real often occur at the same time. I hope you talk more about this.

Can you do more on DID and also maybe one on motivation (especially after the last 2 years)?!

I am probably high on that spectrum. I am depended, addicted to dissociative fantasies... Ever since I was a small boy. I definitely don't have a dissociative disorder and I can tell the difference between reality and fantasy. I just don't live in reality. I realize the damaging effects of this defense mechanism, I understand it's purpose and the harmful effects it had on my life, but when you never really had a chance for a decent life of any kind..When there is nothing out there for you.. It doesn't really matter at all. It's like Nelson Mandela.. He was incarcerated for 30 years in the most inhuman conditions.. You just have to build yourself another world.. To live in it, to survive.. There is no other course of action.

My parents fought a lot during my childhood. At that time, I used to imagine myself in a different world with different people. It used to help become less stressed. Is that dissociation? Also, many people complain about my memory..

I have a lot of episodes where I am spacing out at work. It takes me longer to get things done than it really should. I'm not sure if it is disassociation or if it is something else going on.

My dissociation is sometimes useful in stressful situations. Easy to stay calm and rational if you don't really believe you're there and/or that the thing is happening. Calling police, giving first aid, protecting and calming my students in a lockdown, that sort of thing.

Other times I'm on "autopilot" and somewhere between daydreaming, zoning out and dissociation. Fairly normal and inconsequential to miss chunks of conversation or not remember your commute home. But when it happens almost every time, it makes it harder to engage in conversation and connect with people. Trying to remember details that show understanding and interest in their life. Going down the google rabbit hole and forgetting what you originally intended to search/do.

I'm trying to unlearn my bad "autopilot" habits.

I think you should talk about pseudo seizures due to PTSD and part of disassociation. A lot of people do not know about this but it shows how much our body will do to protect us.

I would love to know more on DID. After being recently diagnosed but also seeing the sigtma surrounding it is a lot to take in

Sometimes it takes me a day or two to wake up so this is a very serious condition. And usually if this happens I wake up angry because I was unable for whatever reason to defend myself. And I don't mean wake up as if from sleep, I mean wake up emotionally.

Could dissociation also come in the form of having conversations with yourself with another person that once you come to you wonder where the time went? A minute or two passes afterwards and you forget what you were talking about but are left with the residue of feelings?

I dissociate. I have Depersonalization(most of the time but i have had both) which is horrible feeling. I have triggers and will start and if i dont catch it soon enough i will dissociate for hours. I have been driving and got pulled over. I dont remember driving or being in the car at all, and it was terrifying because i was so out of it and the only
Reason i got out of it was because i got pulled over.

I most definitely would like to hear more about it. For example what would mild dissociation look like compared to severe dissociation? For example could it be like in the middle of a conversation you lose track of what’s being said, or maybe you don’t know the events that happen for a few seconds or could it be that your brain actually takes you somewhere deep in thought but you don’t really remember what you were thinking. Also how can you stop yourself from dissociating if that’s what you’re brain is doing?

Do you have any tips for dissociation specifically while driving? That’s when it happens to me the most

My therapist says I'm highly dissociative, can you expand on this or what it means by chance? Any help greatly appreciated. Thank you!
