NASA recently announced its new class of astronauts and their skill set is pretty diverse. So, what exactly does it take to be a NASA astronaut?

NASA Announces New Class of Astronaut Trainees
"NASA introduced 12 new astronauts on Wednesday (June 7), who will train for missions into Earth orbit and to deep space. The seven men and five women comprise the 22nd class of American spaceflight trainees since 1959. The group is the largest NASA has selected in almost two decades."

Here's What Emergency Medicine Will Look Like for Astronauts in Space
"If an emergency medical situation arises during a crewed trip to Mars, odds are that the astronauts helping out will have little medical training. Making things even more challenging, the astronauts will be far from home working only with the limited supplies on board - a task that would be difficult for even experienced doctors."

NASA: Astronaut Selection
"NASA selects astronauts from a diverse pool of applicants with a wide variety of backgrounds. From the thousands of applications received, only a few are chosen for the intensive Astronaut Candidate training program. Including the "Original Seven", only 338 astronauts have been selected to date."

Hard to imagine the sensation of being on the tip of a rocket with so much power trusting you into space. Astonishing courage.

I could be an astronaut but I have a bad habit of spacing out.

You forgot the first requirement:
Must be born in the US.
That's pretty much game over for most of us.

this video is great however there is a minor inaccuracy. To be an astronaut your vision has to be correctable to 20/20 not at least 20/20

I'm signing my contract for the Navy on Thursday, I want to get a degree in aerospace engineering, and I want to become a airline pilot. I hope one day I can go in to space, that would be a dream come true!

This is great to know. Who wanted to be an astronaut when they grew up?

How I could be an Astronaut. 1. I am 5.2 right now and growing, Im 13
2. I have the eyes, but I need to stop playing video games
3. I have the brains, in both science and math.
I am all set! NASA, hire me in the year 2027

When I was in kindergarten, I wanted to be an astronaut when I grew up... until I found out just how much training they had to go through. I knew at an early age that I was too lazy to make it.

Childhood dream, and I'd still drop everything in my life if Nasa called and said they want to train me to go up. When I was a teen, my eyes were far too bad, lasik wasn't an option back then, so I never bothered so pursue my true dreams, but went into audio engineering and production instead, among other things. I thought I'd never have a chance. Sad. Now all I have is a pretty bad ass telescope and some nerdy youtube videos! And no friends!
