In order to talk about the Tarnished, we need to understand the history behind The Lands Between, and what has brought us to this point.

The Lands between are watched over by The Greater Will, who is a being of great power, responsible for the creation of the Elden Ring, and the Golden order of the Erdtree.

The Elden Ring was housed within the Erdtree, which would in turn would bless the land and its inhabitants with the grace of the Elden Ring, bringing an incredible level of order to the land...

I have spent 170+ hours on this game. Love every minute of it but had no clue why I was even doing what I was doing. I've watched numerous videos including those of Vaati Vidya and still couldn't make heads nor tails out of the story and my purpose. You sir have explained in extremely understandable detail with complete clarity what happened and why I'm trying to become Elden Lord. Thank you so much for your easy to understand explanation. It has given me new insight and has opened up the game lore wise to me.

Love these vids I have been watching your Div 1 and 2 vids for a few years now but I think you could really help a lot of people out when it comes to the lore of this game because a lot of people don’t understand it

The title "The Lands Between" can be understood as land between some physical locations like the seas surrounding it, or more of a metaphysical place like something between life and afterlife. I think the influence of Greater Will caused it to become the latter. In the opening cinematic every Tarnished you see seem to be dead maybe save Fia. So the Tarnished are people who were banished from the Lands Between or denied access, but they are summoned there as undead of sorts. I think it's also implied that the Lands Between exist beyond time, as we learn in the game that Hourah Loux should be older than any mortal ought to be, so the Tarnished might be summoned from different times as well.
