There's a BIG difference in construction! #automobile #tiretech

Both the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S and Bridgestone Potenza RE-71RS are amongst the best in their respective classes, this shows the different design intentions and the resulting carcass differences between a multipurpose street tire and something more focused on going really fast in the dry.

I've been noting unsprung tire weights for nearly 20 years now, and Michelin is nearly always on the lighter end for a given size while Bridgestone is nearly always on the heavier end. How much of this is brand and how much of this is segment, I wonder? Would be curious to see a comparison between the Pilot Sport and a Cup, or the RE71 and a Potenza Sport.

Interesting to see this. I knew they were more stiff, but didn't think it would show up this dramatically.

Very good demonstration of comfort vs performance 👍😁

I loved the Bridgestone Potenza RE080’s I had on my 02 MR2 Roadster years ago. They were great even in the wet, that was very often living in the UK.

I’ve owned 6 sets of the pilot sport 4s tires and they are, in my opinion, the best summer tire money can buy. If you haven’t owned them, buy a set. You will be amazed. They high speed stability and predictability blew my mind at first. You can take your hands off the wheel at 150mph and the car just tracks straight. I’ve tested them up to 180mph and they didn’t care. If you don’t have a high performance car the benefit of this tire would be even greater. I’d love to mount them on something like a basic Nissan Altima and feel the difference. It would completely transform the car. I usually replace them at 50, 000 miles, but they are never worn to the wear bars which is great for this type of tire and how aggressively I drive. There is no road noise and hydroplaning is a thing of the past. On a new set I’ve driven through the heaviest rain I’ve ever seen and the car never budged. I’ve hit standing water at 80mph on the highway and it just cuts through like nothing. Expensive? Absolutely, but like this man says…you get what you pay for with a tire.

and the michellin one is a road, everyday tire which takes comfort and noise into consideration too.

a tire that specialises in comfort and low noise would probably be even more mushy and soft.

And the PS4S has quite a soft construction for a UHP tyre

Would be completely sufficient if gen public would keep their tyres in legal limit. My Costoc tyrefitter in Manchester said once that he walks often ro the rrafford shopping centre and sees too many illegal tyres on parked cars. He can spot it simply by walkin past ( well he fits tyres all day, a bit like i looked at obese class 2- 3 patients all day and could predict their diet 😅)

Even in the street tire segment - the Bridgestone Potenza Sport has by far the stiffest sidewalls. Huge difference in comfort, but in return you get extremely precise and responsive tyre. It is up to you what you find most important - you can't have it all

When I went from RE001 to PS3 in a 205/45-16 the PS3 was 1kg lighter! Less steering feel but more than made up for it in every other way. Be nice if the 16" sizes got some more love and 15" for that matter.

Talk with Polestar about their new Polestar 4. It got some specielle rubber. With carbon on the sides of the tire. That's what they told me.

Not to mention, the second tire is much smaller in size. Huge difference

I just installed a 2nd set of PS4S and they seem quieter and more compliant than my old set. Both sets were basic / non-OEM PS4S. Have they had a recent refresh or is that just the difference between and old and new tire?

Should I buy the Michelin pilot 4s or Continental sport contact 6? (For a 2023 Audi Q7 suv) Can’t work out which would be better? Thanks

I really don't like the steering feel of the PS4s tires on sports car, this video explain why.
