Ravana was born to a sage and an Asur princess. Asur in Sanskrit does not mean demon. Sur means supreme, god etc. in Sanskrit. Asur therefore means not belonging to sur (the prefix a to a word is used to denote negation or opposite of the word) so his mother must have been of a different human tribe. Genetic and archaeological evidence now points to interbreeding of modern humans and other humanoid species so this could be seen as an example of that. Ravana was highly intelligent, a great devotee of Lord Shiva, a very highly gifted Musician (the raaga Sankarabharanam is attributed to him), a skilled Veena player and one of the most powerful kings of his times. His downfall happened due to him abducting another person's wife. He underestimated King Rama whose wife he abducted. Rama gathered the local armies of various tribes to fight against him and bring back his wife.
