During a Lok Sabha debate on August 7, 2024, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman responded to concerns about the 18% GST on health insurance. She pointed out that the tax on medical insurance predates GST and challenged critics, asking if they had attempted to remove this tax in their respective states before opposing it now.
Addressing the House, FM Sitharaman said "I want to raise two important points - tax has been there on medical insurance even before the introduction of GST. Before the GST was introduced, there was already a pre-GST tax on medical insurance. This is not a new issue, it was already there in all the states. Those protesting here... did they discuss regarding the removal of this tax in their states?"
