Yes that was Barry singing lead. Barry wrote this for Ottis Redding, but he died in a plane crash before he could record it…so they went a head and recorded it. Was a hit for them back in the day. Many people have covered this as well as many Bee Gee songs. They have written over 1, 000 songs and written, produced other artists as well…especially during the ‘80’s. Sadly Barry is the only living brother left. The twins ( Robin and Maurice) and Andy Gibb have all past away. Barry is still recording and writing and collaborating with other artists. He turned 75 this past September. Barry said that he loved love songs, to Ed writing and performing them. His voice is so silky smooth, like butter. The group recorded from 1958 through the 2000’s until Maurice ( pronounced Morris) died! Check out ( Wedding Day and the only love) …

This song were written in 1967 by Barry and Robin with Otis Redding in mind. Sadly he died in a planecrash before he could record it.
They recorded it themselves and this is the result. It is pssibly their most covered song and, yes, Michael Bibble also did a cover a few years ago.
Best known cover is Michael Boltons version from the 90's. But even Janis Joplin and Tom Jones has covered it.
It is true that Barry has a very clean and straight forward voice but you should try to listen to one where Robin is on lead, like " Massachusetts" from 1967 or "I Started A Joke" from 1968.
He has a haunting, crying like vibrator voice that was much of the reason for their succes in the early days. You hear it a bit here in this song in the end. Due to the video it looks like Maurice sitting by the piano coming with that voice in the end but it is infact Robin who is standing behind Barry.
You also right about the way they wrote love songs. One once said: The Bee Gees do not write songs about women but TO women.

The Bee Gees not only sing great....but they were great song writers. Many people have sing their songs. This is the pre-disco era. Decades of greatness they left us. The brothers Gibb.
Loved your reactions. Thank you.

This became one of the songs they regularly sang at concerts. Many artists have covered it. I think it got even better with time, the live performances in 1989 and 90s were wonderful too. You would love I could not love you more, I will and Wedding Day ❤great reaction

Your reactions are exactly how I feel about this song. I was only 12 when it came out, and do not recall seeing the video back then, but chanced upon that video recently. I only knew about their disco era, but this 1967 song just wins me over way more than the disco songs.

Bee Gees write all their songs. This was a number 1 they had it out in the 60’s. Also Barry Gibb is lead oldest brother. The other two are twins Barry’s twin brothers Maurice & Robin. That’s the Gibbs. They also have a brother Andy solo who hit big with 3 songs. Shadow dancing. He died in his 30’s looked just like Barry.

Also Barry is still married to his love of his life from the beginning. He also is the only one still alive & he’s the oldest. Lastly Barry has how many duets with Barbara Streisand guilty, I am a women in love & others.

Listen to The Bee Gees ALONE….. & their hit ONE both are number ones.

Your reactions made me soooo happy. Thank you, and please react to WORDS, which is from 1968 and considered Barry’s signature song. I highly recommend reacting to his perfect live 1989 performance to see the audience interaction.

To Love Somebody is from the Bee Gees album called Bee Gees First. Even though technically it was their third album, it was their first international release. I was released in July of 1967. Otis Redding died in a plane crash in Dec. of 1967. :)

The Bee Gees were around in the late 50's, and they had massive hits during the 60's and 70's, BUT their songs in the 90's like Alone were great as well.

For them to have that much soul at such a young age is incredible! This song has been covered by so many amazing artists! Their music writing ability is second to none!

Barry - the eldest brother (and lead in this and most songs): rich tones, huge range.

Robin - one of the twins (standing behind Barry and took lead in many songs): angelic tone and a truly unique voice.

Maurice - on keyboards on this and most tracks (or on guitar): generally a lower register and the deeper tone that provided the perfect harmonies.

Andy - the youngest brother who was never a member of the Bee Gees (due to being a decade younger), a solo artist in his own right but performed with them a few times before his very early death (most notably on a live performance of You Should Be Dancing - you should check it and his solo hits out) who was facially the image of Barry but shorter like the twins and whose voice was the perfect blend of all his three elder brothers'.

Barry and their sister, Lesley, are the only ones left.

I'm so glad you enjoyed this song so much on your first listen. It was the same way for me as a 15-year-old American living in London when this song hit the radio airwaves in 1967. I became an instant Bee Gees fan, ultimately preferring their '60s material to their '70s disco sound.
