This eighty-foot tall radio tower was installed on this building back in the 1960's. It was used to transmit radio signals to EMS ambulances throughout Oakland County, MI and beyond. Sometime in the 1990's, with advancing communication technology, the antenna on the radio tower was no longer needed. But, since it wasn't bothering anyone, the tower remained standing for almost three more decades.

The decision was made to embark on the task of removing the tower in 2024. The tower was a landmark for many locals as it could be seen for miles away. But, since we had no intentions on ever using the radio tower again, it was decided that we would bring it down, mostly out of an abundance of caution. Afterall, the tower had already been standing for close to sixty years and we were concerned that one day, it might come crashing down.

As you will be able to see in the video, the tower remained in pretty solid shape. It was secured with guy wires, and everything was in pretty good shape overall, considering its age and exposure to the elements.

Its too bad we had to send this radio tower off to the scrapyard as it probably would have been an excellent opportunity for an amateur radio operator, or a CB Radio enthusiast to repurpose the old EMS Radio Tower for their hobby.

At the end of the day, there was a lot of resources that went into getting this tower safely on the ground. It does change the skyscape a bit, but it gives the building a clean look, too.

Unusual tower joint; never saw anything like it before.  I'm not too sure about it, but it stood for 60 years.  Either slip-jointed or flanged was all I ever worked with.  From the welding, I assume the legs were solid instead of a tube.  The probable weight of a section along with the age, I can see why they didn't "unstack" it.

I’d take it to get the steel cleaned and then hot dipped galvanized and put it back up somewhere else.
