It does look like it encourages you to slash rather than to stab

As someone pointed out, Laguiole knives are not ment for heavy outdoor activity. Here in France we use Laguiole for eating, cut cheese/cold cuts. Try holding it like a table knife you'll see what i mean.
Common Laguioles models come with a cork screw on the back. I think it tells a lot on what kind of knife it is :D
If you want a traditional french pocket knife more suited for outdoor use, more like a "sheperd knife", get an Opinel or a Douk-douk

The grip is very reminiscent of the way you hold a conducors baton!
Really cool to see

To me (french) it was always presented as a knife to cut some wood in the forest rather than a weapon, maybe that's why it's more focused on this grip

Pro tip: the g in Laguiole is silent, in the south of france (where this knife is from) we pronounce it like "Layole". They are indeed wider as this is a utility knife, not a combat weapon. Not so long ago everyone would carry one and use it at every meal, usually only forks would be provided at the table. Some of us still do. Yours has an especially plump handle, a nice piece with custom ironworks, including the beautifully minimalistic "mouche", the sculpted fly at the end of the handle back's spine spring . When buying a Laguiole make sure it comes from reputable artisans from the town of Laguiole, as the knife design is not protected and many copycats exist. Also, if you're ever gifted one, be sure to give the smallest coin you have on you in exchange, as this would mean you have symbolically bought your Laguiole from the person giving it to you, otherwise superstitions has it that the relationship with that person is meant to be cut.

This channel teaches me so many niche things I love but don't know how to find. Thanks so much for the immaculate vibes and knowledge you've gathered here.

It would be very French, unconventionally different

i'm french and for us real Lagiuoles are more of a high end cutlery knife rather than a buck knife (they are very common in restaurants). So you would hold them with your index extended on top of the bevel/spine

This grip has the hidden feature that you can never hold the knife with the tip pointing directly up, which would be dangerous for yourself and others around the table.

I have one of these knives from my grandfather. Thanks for letting me know what it was so I can extra cherish it.

I have one of these, an authentic hand made one. It was passed to me when my father died last year and he got it from his brother as a gift when I was born 31 years ago. I never use it but I cherish it very much.

I like that his wife got this knife for him and he’s been making videos on it since

One of my favourite knives is a Laguiole. I found it encouraged me to hold it almost like a pen, but with the handle still inside the hand. So thumb, index and middle finger in the position of a pen, and the handle hidden in the palm. Holding it in this way optimises a precise drawing cut for cutting harder cheeses and cured meats (which it was designed for) on a board without the knife rolling and twisting in the hand as much. I imagine it would make a good skinning knife using that grip too - which again makes sense, since it was originally designed for farmers.

The spine on that Laguiole is gorgeous! :0

I like how you have to hold it exactly like a drumstick

IMHO, Laguiole makes some of the most beautiful knives.

Reminds me of how you hold an Épée with a French handle.
