"The Letter" is a song written by Wayne Carson that was first recorded by the American rock band the Box Tops in 1967. It was the group's first and biggest record chart hit, reaching No. 1 in the United States and Canada. It was also an international success, achieving the top ten in several other countries.
The Box Tops lead vocalist Alex Chilton sang "The Letter" in a gruff blue-eyed soul style. The song launched Chilton's career and inspired numerous cover versions. English rock and soul singer Joe Cocker's 1970 rendition became his first top ten single in the U.S.; several other artists have recorded versions which also reached the record charts.
Rolling Stone magazine included the Box Tops original at No. 372 on its list of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time"; the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame added it to the list of the "500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll". In 2011, the single was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
"The Letter" reached No. 1 on the Hot 100 singles chart published by Billboard magazine on September 23, 1967. It remained at the top position for four weeks and Billboard ranked the record the No. 2 song for 1967. The single sold more than one million copies and the RIAA certified it as gold.

When I was growing up, the kid across the street would blast this out of his window in the evenings. The older people hated it. haha

For anyone who doesn't know, the singer was SIXTEEN years old. He later went on to lead the group Big Star

I can't believe how bored the audience looks. This is such a great song. It sounds as good today as it did back when it first came out.

Man this song is epic. It brings back great memories because when I was in high school I worked briefly at a local radio station when this was at the top of the chart. The record was so short you dare not go to the Coke machine when it was playing on the turntable!

I’ve never seen this video in color. The quality of color video was so crappy in the mid-sixties as studios and stations were transitioning from black and white, but you made this one look fantastic, not to mention the pristine audio.

I used to work for a Memphis-based company and I believe this song has a connection to Chips Moman or Memphis in some way, so now I’ll be racking my brain to figure it out. If anyone can help please chime in. 🧨

Alex Chilton was only 17 when he recorded this song with the Box Tops. He was born 3 days after me but passed away in 2010... It was a big hit in France. Thanks Sammy. I didn't know this video.

i've just been reading about this singer's band Big Star and how the recording industry totally failed to promote them.
