Showcase Tips & Tricks: Changing the orientation of an Inventor model after import in Showcase.

In this video, learn how to properly change the orientation of your Inventor model once imported in Showcase. Often, a .iam or .ipt will be imported leaning on its side and improperly oriented. You will need to open the Import Status window to properly adjust the model orientation. Also, find out what else you can do in the import status window.

I was solving that kind of problem recently. This will be helpful in the future. Thank you!

Oh boy, what a bummer. Well, if that were the biggest problem I had to face in life I'd be doing okay. I noticed in your video that you were adding multiple constraints and that the software said 2011; I was hoping I was doing something wrong so I'm supposing that must have been available in the "days of 'ol". Okay, thanks for your help and keep up those fine videos! I've learned a lot!

Dear Robert,
the reason why I am trying the inventor constraint first in inventor is to make sure that:
1-I choose the right ones
2-I understand their behavior in Inventor and can expect the same in Showcase
3-Show the viewer what is going on to help them understand.
This model came with two constraint and I decided to send both to Showcase. I could choose to send only one or none.
Hope this helps clarify your questions?

You are right.. the name of the file has the label 2011.. which is confusing I agree.. I will watch for that in the future. But notice the version of the Showcase software and Inventor are 2014.

Import of multiple constraint only starting with the 2013 version of Showcase.. You are out of luck.. Good reason to upgrade :)

I am not sure what you are referring too.. But yes, it is possible to bring in as many constraint as you need from Inventor to Showcase.

Well, this is encouraging to say the least. Remember that I have version 2012 of Inventor. Below you stated I was out of luck to import more than one constraint. Are you saying that I can bring in more than one into the same storyboard? That would be great because this product needs to be shown with all four if possible. Thanks

Dear Brian,
I am assuming you need to re-orient your model the proper way because you have some constraints to import? If your model have no Inventor constraint, then go ahead and rotate it. Other wise.. You might want to use the turntable to rotate the model into the right orientation and leave it there. that way the contraint will still work. Is there no way in Inventor for you to re-orient the model?

Hi Marion, First off, I enjoy your videos; you're a good a teacher. Not everyone can teach. I hope you have a solution for me but I'm not sure it's possible. I blew it and in my assembly, way back in the beginning, I made a frame and drilled holes in the wrong side. So I ended up with an assembly file of 300 parts with the Z axis down. Now when I go to bring it into Showcase, neither button will orient it in the correct position. It's either upside down or on it's side. Any solution? Thanks

I watched it again and did actually notice that now. I would like to drive 4 different constraints; is there anyway to get creative and link four animations together without making it look like.... well, you linked 4 animations together?

Hi Marion,
I ended up making another assembly with the Z-up orientation and this time I made several assemblies to avoid the ginormous final assembly with all it's constraints. I tried everything I could but there was no way to reorient it due to the original frame I built everything off of; it was just a novice thing to do. I just wasn't paying attention. I do have a question about importing more than one constraint; can it be done in Inventor 2012? It seems like they only allow one.

You are welcome! Let me know if I can help in any other way. Marion

Yes, everything you import in Showcase is an active link with the file you are importing. In the case of AutoCAD, since you are importing a .dwg, every time you save in AutoCAD, you will received a "need update" message in Showcase. You can choose to update the file to receive the changes. Keep in mind that all the work you are doing in Showcase will be kept: materials application, alternative, behavior, storyboard... and updated with the new model. Let me know if you have more question

Brian, you are starting to confuse me. If you are running 2012, you can only import one constraint. Any other version will allow you to import as many constraint as you need and place them in the storyboard slide. The best place to go for technical questions is the Sowcase Forum. the-area.com
