I had the exact opposite thing happen. I got an awesome modus and a cutjack that was kind of a lemon. Guess it’s just hit or miss with a knife at this price point. I’ll probably pick up another one the next time I’m in a brick and mortar shop.

Interesting, I'd love for you to do a comparison - but maybe somebody out there with a Modus could send it your way so you can see how much actual variation there is between the models? I've noticed that it seems for a production knife, there occasionally seem to be "human factor" steps missed. I have to admit I really like the texturing pattern here, and the aluminum backspacer on both this and the black model looks great.

The green one I had was excellent. Then I gave it away and got the blue one, and I think it's a lemon. Doesn't flip very well at all, odd. I took it apart, everything looks normal, so I'm at a loss.

I actually have two steel will modus and both came centered but one totally had a more snappy action then the other but they both deployed great every time.

Stas- That Modus seems to have some QC issues. Sent back my Massdropp/FF Gent due to lock fail. It bit me. Not a fan of Steel Will's FRN pattern aesthetically. Thanks for the share.

Heat @stassa23 Im just thinking the bearings in the cut jack make it that much smother. My centering came perfect but a bit gritty action just like yours, gunna polish the phosbnz washers also. I do agree with all your opinions on the knife though. From your new bud @x95mk220! Keep up the great reviews & content!

Bothers the hell out of me. But it is a $40 knife not $100 knife. Mine came exactly the same way. I'm pretty sure it's due to a uneven blade tang grind. Still worth the the money.

Great review Stassa! I have a Cutjack and it i s nearly flawless. It is disappointing to hear of some of the workmanship issues you found on the Modus. Maybe they are not deal breakers, but for me personally, when I know a knife makers can make a quality knife, but sometime lets a `bad' one slip thru, that bothers me. I like consistency. I do not expect perfection, though, particularly at this price point. Maybe the Modus assembly line had an off day. Anyway, enough of my babble. Thanks for your review of the Modus. Take care!

Ooh, no, you got a lemon, that blade centering is not right, I have that same one (blue/orange), I just checked it before commenting, perfectly centered and the action and smoothness is the second best bronze washer flipper I've got (behind an old school kizer), it'll shut with a couple gentle shakes. Yes to the comparison.

Sorry to hear about your issues. Just got the same model Modus a couple weeks ago and the centering was dead on and the action was near as smooth as your Cutjack. From reading reviews it kind of seems like luck of the draw on the centering, which is a shame. I'd definitely look into getting it exchanged if you haven't already.

I've had the D2 Steel Will Modus, Tenet and Cutjack for several months.. I've beat the crap out of the CJ and it's been great.. My knife shop is a SW dealer and I think I've handied 4 and all were the same (good)... You got a bad one...
With that being said, the liner locks are on the thin side.. They are really good knives but I think a Rat in D2 with good F&F is just as good...

I love the Modus. It replaced the Cutjack in my pocket most of the time. Great review. Great budget choices from Steel Will.
