Can you imagine in 1979 the first time people heard this? Amazing! Even if you didn't care for this type of music, you had to like this song. The Charlie Daniels Band is incredible!

This song was EVERYWHERE in 1979. #1 on the country charts (of course) and #3 on the Hot 100. Try to watch the live in concert video, sounds identical and it's so fun to watch the band and the crowd.

Interesting facts about the live show of this song:
- guy in the Keyboard had one arm in a cast - he played those keys during the devil part of the song ONE-HANDED;
- It is said that Charlie taught himself how to play the violin (fiddle). Actually they say he learned all his instruments by himself. Every time he played this song you could see the strings of his bow going everywhere. It was common to have him change bows during shows (in-between songs), because all the strings would snap with his vigorous playing;
- the crowd after this song was played went wild for a solid 2 min non-stop!

EDIT: Extra bit not related to the live show but still interesting: apparently during an interview for TV a classical musician said that Charlie wouldn't know how to play any of the classics because he was self-taught and Charlie just grabbed his fiddle and played a classical piece flawless without any music sheet in sight. He was WILD! There is a reason why he is such a legend.

RIP Charlie Daniels. He was great. He was from the Carolinas. His music is bluegrass, country rock. I was a very young child when this song came out, was big lol. Early '80s?

I remember at the ‘96 Olympics in Atlanta—the year the US women’s gymnastics team won team gold for the first time, and Keri Strug’s vault on an injured ankle saved the day— Dominique Moceanu did her floor routine to this song, and as soon as the music started, that arena (in Georgia) erupted—roaring and applause from the crowd. She gave an awesome performance and brought the house down.

This song is pure fire watching them do it live. Charlie was a fantastic musician. It always intrigued me how he holds his fiddle. You would never teach someone to play the fiddle how he holds it but you can't argue with results he the big question is....have fiddle players been holding the fiddle wrong all these years?....Maybe!

It is so fun to watch Charlie Daniels play this. He has bow hairs breaking and rosin dust flying everywhere. I remember well when this came out. I don’t think Charlie could ever get out of playing this song whenever he played anywhere. He would have had seriously disappointed crowds if he did not play this. And no wonder. Check out one of his live performance to watch him play this.

The live versions are incredible.
Charlie Daniels was a great musician, a great man, and a great patriot. I hope he is now in a place that rewards him for all that he was.

I always love watching people react to this song and that mild look of shock when calls the Devil “you son of a b-tch”. I think people don’t expect that from a country song or something…and especially some 40 years ago. I remember it being talked about a lot when I was a kid.
