If you take this movie and pull the fantasy away from the reality, it all starts to make sense.

Max is a deeply troubled boy who dreams of becoming an inventor, but is constantly nagged by bullies at school and parents whose marriage is breaking down to the point of no return. So Max decides to resort to his dreams in order to escape this cruel reality around him, and in the process it makes him feel happier about his own life, while also making the world around him better. It's a very interesting concept that I think this movie executed perfectly.
