In June 2018, Kurgo’s Small, Medium and Large Impact Dog Seatbelt Harness,v.1, were tested at Calspan’s Buffalo, NY crash test facility and passed the laboratory test procedure for pet safety harness restraint systems. The test procedure was developed at the test facility that maintains the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 213 for Child Restraint Systems and conducts all of the car seat performance tests for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The test procedure adapts FMVSS 213’s strict safety standards that are designed to protect children and makes them applicable to dogs. Kurgo’s harnesses passed the standards two criteria, which are: remain within the applicable excursion limits 32 in. for dogs up to 50 lbs. and 36 in. for dogs between 51 and 75 lbs., and maintain their structural integrity post-crash.

So these are only reliable up to 30 mph?

These tests cannot be considered accurate. Human test dummies have joints. In order to make this more accurate the dogs legs would need to be able to bend at the joints and the spine would also need to to he'd like a dog's. Also the dog needs to be standing or laying down as I don't know of a single dog that sits in a car. I have these harnesses and my dogs stand. They are attached to a tether rated at 800lbs. If we crash I guarantee that our dogs will actually slip out of the harness. This is based on the fact that no matter how tight the harness is my younger dog slips out of it fairly easily. I think more testing with an appropriately configured crash test dog with proper joints will give you better results. In the meantime, based on physics I can tell you if you are going over 30 mph (and maybe even under 30 mph) any breed of dog will just slide out of the harnesses. I have designs for a harness that would prevent this.

Do you have crash test videos and data when the dog is laying down?
