Best Exterior Wood Filler: Garage Paint Project

It's NOT a boat video this week! In this video I try a new (to me anyway) waterproof outdoor wood filler/spackle to fill some divots and gaps in exterior wood siding before painting. So far, I've found this to be an AWESOME product for this application.

Thanks! I used this on my outdoor deck to fill cracks and hundreds of nail holes. After repainting, the 20 year old boards look all smooth snd brand new.

Platinum Patch is great! Easy to apply and just hit with sandpaper to get it level with the siding! Currently patching bad spots on the side of my house before the summer rains.

My wood garage, I think built 1931, looks like this one. When it rains, the water comes in through the holes. I can’t afford to hire anyone so guess I’ll try this product. Thanks!

Hey, good vid. Now that it's 3 years later it would be great if you did an add-on video showing how it has held up so far. That's what really counts in the end is whether or not it lasts against the elements!

I think I will give this a shot. Restoring old porch rails and some of the thick spindles have shrunk and no longer reach the bottom rail so need to be filled after I refastened with nail gun.

any experience with 3M Bondo wood filler? looks like it requires mixing, while DAP does not. i'll be filling in some rotten spots on a garage door panel.

I love this stuff, don't know why stores stopped carrying it, I used it for everything, so difficult to get now or have to order online

I was thinking a disc sander or a wood plane would be good for getting the sticky-out parts flat.

Good video. So glad you did not tell me to wear safety goggles, a mask, disconnect the battery, and remove the key. I plan on using that product on the worst siding ever produced, Masonite. Got some water damage, can’t replace the siding, so patch, primer, and paint will have to do.

We got a new roof put on and now I have to fill in all the holes because of wood bees. Any advice on how to stuff the holes most of the way so I can finish filling in the holes before painting?

I just grabbed some of this to fill a rather large chipped off piece of the head board around the exterior, just under the roofing..

Want sure what kind of bondo to get or if to use the JB Weld Kwikwood putty stuff.
But that would definitely need more sanding and this will hopefully work well. We'll find out lol.

( Edited after using ) we'll see how well it dries and holds up, honestly it seemed just like the "normal" wall / joint putty to me. Maybe a little thicker, but not sure how well it'll hold up when slapped on a little thicker. On a decent sized face board breakage, probably around 4 inches long x 1½ inches wide. That starts or ends at the edge, where it's deepest. As part of a larger break, I glued and pounded back in. So I have to fill it and reconstruct the edges corner.
I feel like a bondo would probably work better. But to fill a bunch of small exterior chips and holes, this would probably work well

Is that primer you put on first after you sanded? How do you know that filler is the "best" as the title says?

You may want to add a soffit before you replace the siding
