In germany Bernie Sanders wouldn't be called a "socialist" but a "social democrat" and a moderate one. He doesn't ask for things that aren't already established in some form in germany.
BTW, the "Bertelsmann Foundation" is a "free market" center right organisation with strong ties to the CDU ;)

The small parties in the US are much more radical than their counterpart in Germany. Real politicians have to join the larger parties in the US if they want to change something. Therefore, only the fundamentalists of political directions remain in the small parties.

The AfD was originally founded by radical libertarians. But they have not delimited themselves from right -wing radicals in order to obtain more voters through populist politics. In the meantime, the right -wing radicals have taken over the party.
