In this episode of What Ted Says, we’ll talk about the changes in the tax code and what you can and cannot do when it comes to writing off business mileage with your overall tax management plan. You’ll even learn how to document what you need with your taxes.

Great info Ted. Any chance you can breakdown the facts related to a Real Estate Agents ability to write off showings? What if you have lunch on the way a more granular question as well comes to mind? A video on the nitty gritty would be great. Keep up the good work!

Great video Ted and you answered one of my questions but I have another. I am a 1099 independent contract driver who has a contract with an automotive dealership delivering automotive parts to their clients who order them. So it is 23 miles from my home office to their location which you said is a write off, that's grate. But, what about my return trip home? I do 3 delivery run's a day. one at 8:00 AM one at 11:00 AM and one at 2:00 PM and then I go home after making my last stop. So are those miles from my last stop to home personal or business? I hope you answer this for me so that I can update my excel mileage spreadsheet.

I am a 1099 contractor in construction, the jobsite changes quite regularly as new projects start as I deal in home renovations and run the crew at one jobsite for a couple weeks to a month and then move to the next site. Does this qualify as deductible mileage to the jobsite? I thought I had read if it’s a temporary jobsite that you will be at for less than 6 months then it is deductible?

Hello sir thank you for the great video! If I just purchased a used truck, how many expenses could I write off? Purchase, Gas, mechanic visits, mileage?

The list is actually in order from most expensive to least expensive. I have an LLC for a bounce house rental company. Thank you for your time.

As a musician, I get gigs at different places. Some pay mileage and some don't. Do I report it all as mileage or do I have to separate the two?

What if I travel from my home to visit a potential client? Would I have to visit multiple clients amd consider the first leg of travel to be commuting?

So, I'm doing Walmart delivery driving as a side gig and they gave me a 1099 to do my taxes, so i'm able to do the mileage/the gas paid? :) Sounds awesome

Good advice! I own & operate a stock photo/video LLC from a home office, I find myself constantly shooting random clips of stuff at random locations, even with my iphone that sometimes end up selling. Since income is occasionally produced from these clips, would all these trips count as business write offs if i’m able to provide proof that media was shot during these trips? Thank you!

If I’m understanding this correctly: documentation of mileage as a business expense only needs to be provided under an audit?

Love the informative video. I have a question and hope you can answer. I just recently started a weekend merchandiser 1099 job. I work for a tortilla company and take care of 10 stores facing and stocking their product. I get paid the same amount per location and some are further than others. Am I able to write off gas or mileage for this? And if so, would I get the whole amount back or just a percentage?

What if I'm a business owner that uses Uber to run errands for my business such as going to vendors to purchase materials or going to post office/FedEx to ship out orders? Can I take advantage of deductions? I live in Chicago and mainly using public transportation to commute, however I also use Uber to run business related errands.

Hi Ted, as a Rideshare driver, if i rented a car from Lyft for the entire year to do rideshare driving, can i take the standard mileage deduction? As long as I don't also deduct my rental payments? My rental cost included commercial insurance, registration, oil changes, tire replacement... even the cost of depreciation was included in the rental cost. I paid through my nose for the convenience of not having to make a bunch if different payments. Does the IRS really care if I financed the car, leased it, rented it or paid for it in cash or got it for free from my parents? I really think it's irrelevant. Whatever the case, the standard mileage deduction covers the vehicle expenses. Contract or no contract or the type of contract should not matter in regards to the standard mileage deduction. The company pays for all the vehicle expenses & passes it on to me in the rental fee, and they also add their profit margin bc they get the cars at fleet pricing & i paid them $950/mo. I can't itemize bc i didn't save every receipt for gas & car washes, etc etc.

I work for a private home health company. Providing nursing services to patients. I get a W-2 at the end of the year but we do not get reimbursed on he miles we drive to the patients house. I work for the private company so its not a 1099. Is it possible to write off my miles to the standard IRS mile deduction if I am keeping track of my miles?
