Without government there is chaos. Why? Why are individuals incapable of governing themselves within a society? Why do we need to designate state leaders for a society to be successful? What is it about human nature that requires individuals to transfer their governing power to a select few? Thomas Hobbes' "Leviathan" is a classic philosophical text that proposes answers to these questions which are the foundation of much of the world's modern forms of government.

Leviathan got me into political philosophy when I was a teenager. It is interesting to hear you compare Hobbes with Obama's doctrine. I have the same edition!
These videos are excellent, really appreciate your analysis.
Ahaha your analog to the video games civ is very on point too.

I was wondering if you could give tips on reading large books as this one, on a shorter period.
And on preserving their messages.

How would Hobbes deal with the problem of policing the police? Sociobiologists consider sympathy, friendship and mutual aid rooted in human nature, what does Hobbes think of that? What is the deviation between J.S.Mill"s theory of liberty and Hobbes" view of a mechanical human?

Why are SOME individuals incapable of governing themselves within a society = irresponsible - or lacking - parental upbringing and/or personality disorders.

Do you agree or disagree with Hobbes' view of human nature as motivated only by self-preservation? Why do you agree or disagree?
