In this video we discuss tips to consider when looking to buy the best security cameras for your smart home. These tips are aimed at the consumer and homeowner wanting to educate themself on what to look for when shopping for home security options. Whether it's a full blown wired DVR camera system, a single Wifi Smart Camera or a video doorbell, we cover all your bases as far as what to think about before purchasing all the above.

Please keep in mind, there are exceptions to all of the pros and cons I mention in this video. These are GENERAL tips based on our customers (with the average budget) in the market to buy a home security camera system in 2022. For the examples in this video, I'm talking about the most common equipment that is available to purchase for a residential consumer.

Wow. I've been designing and installing alarm and cctv systems for 20+ years and i so so enjoyed listening to this explanation of the variations out there. This guy not only comes across as a genuinely nice guy but everything he said was absolutely spot on. And I learned stuff about the wifi cams that i didnt know because as professionals we often deal with professional products that don't always include cams like Nest etc. Sometimes in our business you hear people drone on about things they really dont know about, but this guy is telling you the truth.

I have one question: What is your opinion on jamming. I mean for little money the wireless cams can completly get jammed and not work at all.

If that happens how do the cameras react? Sound a loud alarm?
But could that also possible happen to the wired dvr cam? I mean sure the camera itself will not get jammed but the wifi in your house from outside? Sure you will still have the content locally saved but no real liveview and therefore no prevention like you always advise like e.g. two way communication to scare the burglars away.

And one last question: what are the best wired cameras with smart features such as facial/pet recognition (homekit support not needed)?

Always seems to come down to cost - I'm sure wired systems cost a lot more, then there is finding a reliable install such as yourself. So ease of installation for a homeowner plus reliability of the camera system and a reliable WiFi system. Got It. Thanks for your help.

The problem about internet going down (burglars mess with your telecom line, connection faults etc) is easily fixed with getting a 4G lte router, an unlimited data connection in any provider you prefer, and an lte failover switch/router plugged into a ups.
It's gonna cost a few extra bucks, but to me it's worth having a steady internet connection no matter what happens, so your system is always up and running.
Poor cellular/4g signal reception is easily fixed with additional antennas (external is better) installed on the lte router.

99% of this video is spot on and very informative. However you missed me when you said nvr/dvrs don't have as many features 🤔. Most the NVRs i install have tons of features you just have to use them. Wired systems can be wired to alarms, doors, strobe lights, speakers ect.

Camera security, regardless of the manufacturer, can be enhanced by making sure to change the default settings so online scanners can't access the video feed even if it is detected. The home network should also be designed with security in mind - prevent incoming connections from unknown sources and only allow outbound connections to secure (https) known destinations. The premise is simple, actually doing it does take a little research and work, but it can be done.

Excellent video with a lot of good information.
I have a WiFi camera that only has motion detection and it's so bad that I had to turn off notifications. I recently installed a POE camera system with an NVR. Although it doesn't have facial recognition it does have Vehicle and Person detection that works flawlessly so I couldn't be happier with it.
I was only able to afford a system with 4MP cameras but I can upgrade individual cameras to 4K (8MP) or up to 12MP as I can afford it.

There is one other thing to consider with WiFi cameras and that is WiFi bandwidth, each camera becomes another device using up your WiFi bandwidth.

Excellent no-nonsense straight-to-the-point. Thank you for explaining facial recognition. I'm looking to replace my Amcrest POE, having problems with it not notifying iPhone, but no problem with Android. I'll continue to watch your videos hopefully I can find a recommendation for a POE system with facial and a app with notifications with Apple and Android phones.
