That bed of flowers is actually Chara's grave. In the genocide run you learn that Toriel took their body with her to the ruins and buried it there. That's why both Toriel (after being spared) and Asriel go to this place. What it means that your game starts exactly on top of the grave, you may interpret yourselves ;)
