There are plenty of petrol grass trimmers and brushcutters in the STIHL range, with a model for every job. The STIHL range of grass trimmers and brushcutters starts with our homeowner products, specifically designed for use around small to medium sized gardens. The STIHL FS 38 and FS 40 petrol grass trimmers are both ideal for trimming lawn edges or cutting areas of grass around the garden that a lawn mower cannot reach.

It's important to wear the correct PPE while using a STIHL grass trimmer. Face protection and eye protection is necessary to protect you from rocks or debris flicked up by the mowing line. Ear protection is also required for all petrol STIHL tools. However, if you’d like to avoid wearing ear defenders, we recommend choosing a STIHL cordless grass trimmer or brushcutter instead.

Starting the STIHL FS 38 or FS 40 is easy. Simply place the grass trimmer on a flat surface, lock the throttle lever, press the choke lever, prime the carburettor and pull the starter cord. The round handle is comfortable to hold and helps the STIHL grass trimmer to sit across the user’s body. In the position highlighted in the video, it can be used to trim the grass while walking forward, allowing lawn edges to be trimmed with minimal effort.

The curved shaft helps to bring the cutting head closer to the user, improving control and accuracy when trimming around flower beds and fences. Since there’s no gearbox, the shaft is also much lighter compared to straight shaft models too.

The STIHL FS 38 and FS 40 grass trimmers both come as standard with the STIHL AutoCut C 6-2 mowing head. Should the line get worn, re-extending the line can be done quickly by simply bumping the head on the ground with the trigger pulled. The blade will then cut the line to length automatically, allowing you to carry on working with minimal disruption.

For tougher grass or patches of brambles, why not try out the STIHL PolyCut 6-2 mowing head? Instead of mowing line, PolyCut mowing heads use polymer blades capable of cutting through thicker material.

If your STIHL grass trimmer is only used occasionally, we recommend fuelling with our pre-mixed alkylate fuel Motomix. STIHL MotoMix is ethanol free and has a significantly longer shelf life than standard forecourt fuel, meaning it can be left in the tank for long periods without the risk of damaging the carburettor.
