Lots of videos show how to set sine bar to a particular angle, but yours is the only one I've found that shows how to use the sine bar (once set) during actual machining operations. Thanks!

Mr. Pete. I just learned something today from you. Like the saying goes, you're never to old to learn. I'm 55, been a toolmaker for 30 years and have taught many people how to machine, but the magnets and the thin Sine Bar on the lathe compound is a heck of an idea. Also, thanks for all of your videos. I really enjoy them. When I started in the trade, I was trained by an older gentlemen like you. It's a shame that the common sense machining is not embraced by the younger generation today.

As a younger guy, id like to thank you mr pete. By the time i hit high school, metal shop was long gone. Had this program still existed it would have given people like me a clear understanding of "what do i need to learn this math for" telling kids they will need it, and showing them how to apply it are two totally different things. I wish more people took the time to impart there wisdom to the younger generations. Odd, i could take CAD but not manual machining. Truly a dying art.

Still great 10 years later, thanks Sir and big love to you and yours

I love the Thorsen wrench. A blast from the past and a thing of beauty. Thanks for the lesson.

Your videos are required watching for anyone doing machine work.As always great stuff.

Tubalcain, you are surely a great teacher. Please continue with other lessons!!!

Mr. Pete. sure have enjoyed your videos and your comments.Thought i was the only one with some of those thoughts.wished you had been my teacher 30 years ago it would sure have saved me from the school of hard nocks.
WITH HAMMER IN HAND AMERICA WILL STAND.

Hands on machine setting and the ability to actually think and calculate angles etc is something the younger generation is lacking in because they rely on tech rather skill. My son now 17 keeps telling me I should be his tech teacher at school with little tricks he has learned from me. Made a Traming alignment tool when I worked with cylinder heads 20 years ago and now ya can buy them ? Good stuff MrPete :)

Thanks a million Mr. Pete this was really awesome and a lucid explanation about sine bar and as much i thought of sine bars uses were really not worthy but u're videos made me to think of almost all the applications of sine bar!!! thanks a lot again !!!

Thanks for This Old School Lesson Great lessons for us who are just starting to learn this and will never have modern CNC Machines that do most of the Brain work

that double indicator looks handy. At my work I use huge sine plates to machine molds. I even work on an old CNC machine that has the spindle mounted on a Sine plate. I have to setup the spindle on a compound angle to machine huge molds where I couldn't reach straight. It's a pain in the ass but I can do it pretty quick. Programming like that sounds complicated but it's actually pretty easy.

That was a great lesson on a Sine Bar and it's uses, even made me get my old book of trigonometry out for some review. I'm going to be looking for one and a set of gage blocks for my shop. Thanks again!!

Really great, never an end to the creativity of the giants who went before us on whose shoulders we stand. The coup de gras is you showing us some applications. Something to ask for, for Christmas. After binging on your videos, that list is getting long. I hope I was good enough this past year to warrant that list, from Santa.

Again, Mr Cain, Thank you Sir, for sharing you extensive knowledge!

Very will (both parts) explained Lye. Yes, jumping around learning all I can about the usefulness of a sine bar in the shop. It's now June 2021 and my new Wilton 11702 3 axis vise just arrived and now the check out to see how precise there sine scales are on the vise. Boy, for the money, hope they are wright on (@@)! Was looking for a UVT 5in, but to large for my R-F 31, and rare to fine at a decent price. Really like the latest video on the Model A tranny cut-away, , , brings back a lot of memories. Try to stay cool this summer, Bear in TX.

Brilliant, I have heard of sine bars, seen pictures of them and had no clue how they were used. Now I see how they are used and I want one (several actually). Thank you

I do it this way because I don't have a sine bar. With 2 dial indicators you can measure the travel of your cross-slide (indicator must be parallel to the cross-slide) over the change in distance on the compound (indicator must be perpendicular to the compound) and use trig to get the angle of the compound.

Great introduction to the sine bar, uses and set up
