Apparently “Cannibal Island” (Nazino Island) was an island in the middle of a river in Russia. About 6700 prisoners (some criminals, yes, but also traders or peasants trying to flee a famine) were deported there and told to construct a settlement and cultivate the island… but they were barely given any flour for food, and none of the tools, clothing, or shelter necessary to survive the Russian winter. After 13 weeks, over 4000 of the deportees had died or disappeared, and most of the survivors were in poor condition. Anyone who tried to leave the island was killed by armed guards.
