I always compare myself to others' art...sometimes it makes me feel motivated, sometimes i feel bad.

I can relate to this on so many levels!! As an artist there have been times when I've constantly doubted myself and my work because of not receiving social approval. I'd restrain myself from making or posting new artworks just because it wouldn't get enough likes or views on youtube. I'd keep asking myself if my work is good enough, I had given up and I stopped posting for a few months. It's been 3 years since I started my art account and even though I have a small follower count I have stopped letting numbers bother me. I've realized that seeking validation is just going to keep you trapped. Do things for YOU and do not let numbers define you. Don't let other people in real life or on social media get in your way of becoming the best that you can be! ❤️✨

Gaaaawd I love it when someone whips out a graph to explain something!😍 Seriously it always clicks so much more, so thank you. Also, you're *insanely pretty. A skilled work of art. Thank you again for the vid!!!

Hmm, I find comparing myself to others can be stressful, but also motivating? Like you want to do even better, but also it can be overwhelming to try achieve so much better and be as good as someone else

Thank you, makoccino, for normalizing my experience. I've been painting for a year or so, inspired by a youtuber, and I am still trying to find my style. Right now I am just trying different techniques and painting the things I see around me. Recently, I was watching a video and someone had called in a question about their being blocked and said that they had to do something important and right away. The person they were asking said, 'Well there's your problem right there'. The idea that we have to be relevent when we create, like we have to justify what we are doing in the eyes of onlookers, can really drain you of creativity. And I find that a canvas is harder to scrap than a sketch, just for reasons of cost. So I've taken to drawing on the canvas to help with composition and even color. What you said about looking back on what you have done is really important - it's like a journal and it tells you where you were and how far you've come. Surely, most people can relate to reading something that they wrote when they were younger and thinking, 'My goodness, I was so silly then'.
Anyway, thanks again for illiterating a normal experience for me. All the best!

I think some of evaluating ones art is ones background, how you were brought up, your colleagues, and your age. It helpful to take classes and join groups with the same interests. Currently, I'm frustrated because I can't afford lessons and nice art equipment.

It was absolutely about time to hear that and I can relate so much to this high and low!
I was sooo many times in this state of hating my art, but with your words now I can finally look at this with a different eye.

I can completely relate to the video, but yesterday when I was making a painting I thought I ruined it midway but then I thought to continue it, at last it has turned out to be 1of my favourite painting 🎨😄

Thank you for this encouragement. I’ve grasped over lots of my early pieces. I’ve been blocked for months. It doesn’t help when I get negative criticism. But I need to remember my mother doesn’t understand art AT ALL. So I shoul take that into consideration and just not ask her AT ALL how she likes a painting!!
