On August 15, 1947, India finally won her independence after years of British rule, first under the East India Company and later directly under the British government. To win her independence, India needed the people to rise up and over the years, we have seen countless Indians fight for freedom from colonial rule, some of whom have mostly been forgotten by the annals of history.

With Independence Day around the corner, we take a look at a number of freedom fighters through the centuries, who gave up their lives or liberty, so that today, we are free to grow up free and independent.
