To win her independence, India needed the people to rise up and over the years, we have seen countless Indians fight for freedom from colonial rule, some of whom have mostly been forgotten by the annals of history.

With Independence Day around the corner, we take a look at a number of freedom fighters through the centuries, who gave up their lives or liberty, so that today, we are free to grow up free and independent.

Tirot Singh, Pir Ali Khan, Abakka Chowta, Velu Nachiyar, Kittur Chenamma were not freedom fighters, they were fighting for their kingdoms and themselves.
