I think it makes perfect sense, but is left ambiguous as to what the actual creature does or if a function of. So far, the Doctor has explained that things like the Toymaker and Maestro are functions of the universe they came from - the toymaker presumably being something like chaos or the like, and Maestro being music or sound. That’s why I think this creature is another one of those functions. It doesn’t need to be explained because it’s outside the rules of our universe, but I think it represents the idea of superstition, the supernatural or emotion, like the fear of loss. The overall episode uses the creature in a really cool way, and thats as a metaphor for personal demons/a secret. With that, it uses the metaphor as a lesson that your own insecurities/secrets can be used as a weapon, or be a benefit to you. So yea :)

I'm praying they follow up on this in a later episode to explain it, it could be a banger if it slots into ruby's lore.
