Ho fatto o sono fatto? Careful what you’re saying!
‘Passato prossimo’ is an Italian past tense used to talk about completed events in the past and you need SUBJECT + AUXILIARY + PAST PARTICIPLE OF THE VERB.
The structure of passato prossimo is similar to the English tense present perfect.
Unlike English, you can have two types of auxiliaries: TO BE and TO HAVE.
But when do you use TO BE and when do you need TO HAVE? Take this test - you have 3 seconds to decide!
Io ___ mangiato la pasta. - I ate pasta today.
- ho
- sono
The answer is ho - I have! For verbs that can be followed by an object, called transitive verbs, you usually use TO HAVE auxiliary (avere).
Lui ___ andato al ristorante. - He has gone to the restaurant.
- ha
- è
The answer is: è - is! If you have action verbs such as ‘andare - to go’, ‘venire - to come’, the right auxiliary is TO BE (essere)
Mia mamma ____ arrivata a casa. - My mum has arrived home.
The answer is: è - is! Again, this is an action verb and keep in mind that, if the subject is feminine, you also need to change the ending of the verb.
Masculine: è arrivato
Feminine: è arrivata
Francesco ____ fatto una torta. - Francesco has baked/made a cake.
The answer is: ha - has! Fare - to do/make is a transitive verb - a verb that can be followed by an object - and needs the auxiliary TO HAVE (avere).
Also, if you get it wrong and say ‘sono fatto - (lit) I am made’ instead of ‘ho fatto - I have made’, you will accidentally say ‘I’m stoned’!
And here’s the last one: Noi _____ partiti tardi. - We left late.
