Learn how to make your own Brave tartan-inspired elbow patch cardigan or sweater!

Merida is a skilled archer and impetuous daughter of King Fergus and Queen Elinor. Determined to carve her own path in life, Merida defies an age-old custom sacred to the uproarious lords of the land: massive Lord MacGuffin, surly Lord Macintosh and cantankerous Lord Dingwall. Merida's actions inadvertently unleash chaos and fury in the kingdom, and when she turns to an eccentric old Witch for help, she is granted an ill-fated wish. The ensuing peril forces Merida to discover the meaning of true bravery in order to undo a beastly curse before it's too late.

Thank goodness for another great rainy day activity. Cashmere, hearts and sweaters, sounds soooo cozy!

Being Canadian, I've always worn flannel tartan pajamas. Now my kids wear tartan pajamas. Tartan always reminds me of skirts--and pajamas.

I see these kind of cardigans everywhere now. It's good to know that I can make them myself and simply take them off if I don't like them anymore. A lot cheaper than buying one!

This is a cute little project, particularly for those sweaters we've worn holes in the elbows from leaning on the desk. I have to believe there could be issues with shrinkage of the patch if the fabric is not prewashed in the same method you'll use for the sweater.

Well, I think this is really cute. I love the vintage-y, worn-in vibe of elbow patches and I like the fabric idea. Mostly because my school's mascot is a specific red-and-green tartan (yeah, I know...a pattern, haha, but we like to put it on a Scottie dog so it actually seems more like a mascot), so I've been around a LOT of Tartan, haha. And this was released on my birthday. But I don't think that really matters to anyone other than me. xD

Love this and appreciate that she said you don't have to buy anything new and you can use something you already own. I did a similar DIY a little while back but had some issues with the edges of the heart fraying. I wonder how Erica prevents that.

On a sweater yeah it does look silly on the elbows. I'd put one where my heart is that would look cuter in my opinion. Or I could use a jacket and leather looking fabric and place them on the elbows that would look cute but I could probably want to use a plaid jacket and plain elbow pieces; that might be another reason why it looks kinda silly.
Also maybe making a capelet or something would have been better suited for promoting Brave. Or that tartan she was talking about..

Yeah... P.S. I made this is kinda silly most of the time. They have cool ideas, but sometimes, it'd just be better to buy the real deal.

You could spell cardigan correctly. It's only a city in Wales.

DON'T use your good fabric scissors on paper That is the fastest way to dull

never cut paper with fabric scissors, that was painful to watch.

First rule: never ever cut paper with your fabric scissors...

she cut her paper with her FABRIC SCISSORS. That is terrible for your scissors

This is nothing new. My grandmother mended worn out sweater and shirt elbows with patches in the early 1900's. Now it's a fashion statement?
