Kamala Harris shuts down pro-Palestine protesters during Detroit rally; suggests they prefer Trump

When pro-Palestine protesters heckled US presidential candidate Kamala Harris at a Detroit rally over continued US support for Israel, this was her response.

The vice president not only shut down the chants by protesters last night, she also suggested that the activists would prefer Republican rival Donald Trump win the November presidential election.

Harris, who officially became the Democrat's presidential nominee this week, has yet to set a distinct course on how she would handle Israel's ongoing war on Gaza.

Before yesterday's rally in Detroit — whose wider metro area includes Dearborn, the largest city with an Arab majority in the US — Harris met with two Arab-American leaders of the Uncommitted movement, who said that the vice president had expressed openness to discussing an arms embargo on Israel.

According to a New York Times report, uncommitted leaders Abbas Alawieh and Layla Elabed "wanted to support her but... wanted her to consider an arms embargo". The report added that Harris was "open to it". The New Arab could not verify the claims made in the newspaper.

A statement later released by the Harris campaign has sent mixed messages, with some outlets interpreting it as rejecting suggestions that the vice president is open to talks on an Israel arms embargo.

She doesn’t know how to respond when she’s caught off guard. Her response not only didn’t make sense, but it was weak. A better response would have just been to say, I hear you, I see you, and I’m meeting with representatives from families of folks in Gaza, but I’ll be powerless to do anything at all if I can’t get out my message. None of that would have been a lie. These people have multiple family members who are being slaughtered daily with their tax dollars and they just want to be heard. A good leader would know this and act accordingly.
