Police in the US have released video footage from the cameras on the Uber self-driving car that fatally struck a pedestrian.

The footage shows the moments before the collision in Tempe, Arizona, but not the moment of impact.

It also shows the driver's reaction as the car ploughed into 49-year-old Elaine Herzberg as she was pushing a bicycle across the road.

Ms Herzberg was taken to hospital but later died of her injuries.

It comes as UK trials for driverless vehicles continue in Milton Keynes.

No reflector on the bike's wheels... wearing black cloths in the dark... crossing a road without looking from nowhere...

I wouldn't expect it to recognize a pedestrian crossing the road then stop in less than a second.

There's a very good chance many drivers would have hit that person too as he didn't appear in the lights until the very last second.

If you look at the video carefully, the woman doesn't even look at the car. As if she was being suicidal.

This was absolutely the ladies fault. Illegally crossing the road at night while wearing dark clothes and white shoes that blend in with the lane divide. I would bet that out of 100 people driving in that same situation, not 1 person would not run her over.

It's a miracle that woman was able to even live to the age of 49.

How does one not notice the headlights of a car traveling towards your general direction before walking your bike across the road from the far side and into it's path? If she didn't notice the car then it would seem even less likely that the car would have noticed her, whether it be driven by a human or not.

I’m not blaming the car on this one, that lady was walking in front of traffic no cross walk or nothing in sigh.

Plus you couldn’t even see her till the last moment, it was like she just popped up out of thin air.

Just cross the street when it’s clear people, especially at night, and especially now with the bright ass headlights people have it’s even harder to see if the on coming traffic is blinding you.

The driver should have been paying attention but there is no way even if they were they could have stopped in time. That person should not have been in the road in the middle of the night

The one on the bicycle wearing black, no reflective gear, not checking left and right, driver looking at the phone..what fo you expect ? It’s the car’s fault now ?

Those deaths will not be in vain. Their deaths will contribute to improving autonomous cars.

Even if the car is self driving, never lose attention or do anything else, it can still lead to fatal accidents or when people have life changing injuries

It’s sad someone lost their life, but in all fairness the person was crossing in a dark area of the road and not using a proper crosswalk. This part of self driving cars will need major improvements and distance of censors to allow time for stopping the vehicle.

Anyone driving a very recent modern car with sensors, dual cameras, etc will know only too well how they perform in certain weather conditions, heavy snow, hail, dirty windscreen, etc. That’s why easy access buttons are available to turn off those annoying sounds when a sensor thinks it’s detected something.

Jaywalking in the middle of the her fault. It could have been anybody who hit her, just bad luck it was a driverless car.

I just worry too much, I can't not be totally in control.

That dark spot appears to be doctored.

I think the pedestrian is to blame because he did not analyze the distance to the car and went out onto an unregulated section of the road in the dark!
