This is the complete audiobook of the Enuma Elish : The Babylonian Epic of Creation that also comes with commentary. I hope that you all enjoy this awesome work that helps us better understand ancient Mesopotamian Mythology, Religion and Civilization.

The Enuma Elish (also known as The Seven Tablets of Creation) is the Mesopotamian creation myth whose title is derived from the opening lines of the piece, "When on High". All of the tablets containing the myth, found at Ashur, Kish, Ashurbanipal's library at Nineveh, Sultantepe, and other excavated sites, date to c. 1200 BCE but their colophons indicate that these are all copies of a much older version of the myth dating from long before the fall of Sumer in c. 1750 BCE.

As Marduk, the champion of the young gods in their war against Tiamat, is of Babylonian origin, the Sumerian Ea/Enki or Enlil is thought to have played the major role in the original version of the story. The copy found at Ashur has the god Ashur in the main role as was the custom of the cities of Mesopotamia. The god of each city was always considered the best and most powerful. Marduk, the god of Babylon, only figures as prominently as he does in the story because most of the copies found are from Babylonian scribes. Even so, Ea does still play an important part in the Babylonian version of the Enuma Elish by creating human beings.

Funny how some ancient texts are regarded as myths and some are regarded as.. well, word of god and fact.

I have wanted to hear this story for a long time. It's referenced in so many other videos but I never found a translation as good as this one. It was very interesting to watch! Thanks for putting it together

I'm late with a comment, but this is a great reading of a great text. It provides some nice insight into some of the universal aspects of human creativity. Sometimes ancient writing, evolving as an accounting tool, can give the mistaken impression that ancient people were blunt and simple, so it's nice to have examples that connect us to complexity, nuance, and emotion.

There is so much story-based content about this on the internet that it is hard to know what's true and what's exaggeration. It is great to have an objective view with well documented evidences presented in such an easy to understand manner. Great 😊

My time in college studying world religions is what made me non denominational and spiritual, not religious. They are ALL linked and I've known that since college... so much confusion and apprehension because the world lied to us all and some of us were intelligent enough to sense it and research it. We were called so many names and laughed at and disowned for being wiser and less gullible. It hurts my heart and soul and makes me really wonder if my next life can be as a rock....

This story is actually fairly good at representing history. The Persian gulf flooded over years to the coast line that existed during Sumerian times. And as Tiamat is representative of salt water, it would seems to people living in that valley like Tiamat was attacking them. It makes me think that the story of Apsu getting angry and being killed is about a big river flood that happened right before the Persian gulf flood. Anyway, there is also evidence of a meteor striking in the Persian gulf region that would have stuck the salty water of the gulf(Marduk slating Tiamat). The tale of the winds and the fire, tsunamis, earthquakes, etc. It would really have seemed like a battle of the gods. And if the water happened to stop rising around the same time? Well Marduk had defeated Tiamat, right?

Now im all for freedom of religion, and we are free to believe whatever faith we want, But the ammount of people in the comments who are bashing this myth and promoting their own saddens me.
Instead of looking back on these stories with genuine interest for learning, yall just came here to Bluff how true your religion is.
We get it! The Enuma Elish is clearly a MYTH ✨

These people back 3600 years ago were so dam smart. We tend to think of them as not educated and so far behind in tech and knowledge but these people knew a lot of things we didn't get until this century

This was such a treat to listen to! Thanks for making this New Year celebration more enjoyable. I have to say the context you placed the story in really made it feel that much more alive. The way the narrative kept trying to justify the strength of a man against a woman (when Enki/Ea was talking with Anshar about defeating Tiamat) all while this was replacing Inanna's worship with Marduk in real time, it really seemed to parallel a greater message being told as society in Mesopotamia may have begun to move away from a Matriarchal to a Patriarchal society. I wonder if this was a motivator for the people reciting these stories at the time.

Thanks as always, great video! I am so sick of YouTube recommending all these conspiracy history videos; ancient aliens, amazing technology, hidden history. And the videos have millions of views, and the viewers believe them to be fact. Saddens me, but I'm glad we have your videos

If you look back before this, approx. 2800bc the mesopotamians knew 'Enki' (god associated with water, knowledge, crafts and creation) and 'Enlil' (god associated with wind, air, earth, and storms later know as 'Elil'). 'Enlil' was the warrior leader 'sent down' from the heavens who later told another of their kind, 'Mami' to create a workforce . . . us. According to surviving texts from that ere it was also 'Enlil' that failed when trying to control our population growth with plagues, famine etc and decided to wipe us all out with a massive flood yet failed again when a man ('Atrahasis') saved his family and numerous local wildlife within a floating vessel forming the basis for the story of 'Noah' within the bible.

It was written that when the Igigi (watchers) rebelled against their creators (Anunaki), they refused to mine the most sought after gold. The creators banished the Igigi (Fallen ones) and made men (Adamu-slave ) to serve them instead. At first the Anunakis created all men (male) and decided to finish them off after their gold mining is done because they would not procreate as there were no women. Enki secretly created women. When the Anunakis returned after several hundred thousand years, they found that humans have increased in population. The Anunakis then decided to teach men to live in a right way. However, the Igigi, angry with the Anunaki for banishing them, decided to corrupt mankind to thwart the Anunakis creation by taking for themselves women as wives and taught men all the arts that was forbidden by the Anunakis. And hence Giants Nephillim were born on the earth (Book of Enoch- and they taught men the cutting of the roots(DNA)) And men became corrupt in all his ways. The Anunakis decided to wipe out mankind by bringing about the floods. However, once again Enki secretly told Noah to build an ark and save themselves and mankind once again.
