The Powell Memo, penned in 1971 by Lewis F. Powell Jr. for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, urged corporate America to combat anti-business sentiment by aggressively influencing politics. It advocated funding think tanks, shaping media, and lobbying to entrench corporate power. This strategy polarized politics, prioritizing wealth over public interest, and laid the groundwork for decisions like Citizens United (2010), which unleashed unlimited corporate campaign spending, amplifying elite influence. By promoting deregulation and tax policies favoring the rich, the memo fueled a massive wealth gap, concentrating economic power among a few while undermining democratic fairness and exacerbating inequality over decades.
