In high school we did it for cool sound.

Literally the difference between drinking through a coffee straw vs picking the cup up and drinking like an adult.

It's worth it for the sound alone

i still say its a roll of the dice. 88-95 chevys had a cold air pipe to take air from the fender so when it was stock it was actually getting cooler air. with the lid flipped its sucking all the hot air from the engine. The reason it made more HP in this video is the hood is open so it can draw outside air.

What is fact is it sounds way more bad ass. no one will ever tell me otherwise :D

Got to love the old Rochester quadrajet sound. Sounds of the 70’s and 80’s

I used to do it on my 71 Buick GS 455 back in the day and it had a great quadrajet 4bbl that would open up instantly when you'd punch it, would light the tires up effortlessly too

It's what we did to our cars in the 70s&80s. Man I am getting old

We did this in the 70's, my 67 Bonneville with a 400 sounded awesome when the 4 bbl kicked in 😉👍😬

I have been doing that forever, over 40 years on my Chevelle, my 75 Impala along with my 66Impala SS, plus the sound is Fantastic ..

Back in the 70's hearing those secondaries kick in, and a few STP stickers plastered under the hood could win any race.

It's worth it for just the sound, but I actually did it for something else. I used to drive my '89 Caprice from Virginia to North Carolina all the time and it legitimately makes better fuel mileage with the lid flipped

All of the high school kids that did this are now validated.

I'm sure the change will vary, but it still is cool to see actual test data.

But I added a cold air breather that I made myself and it had dual snorkels which I placed in the fenders behind the headlights and I got a huge increase and better performance.

Sounds better also, love the sound of a quadrajet when the secondaries open

Can't beat the sound of that especially with an old school quadrajet four barrel

Ran a cab with a 383 and flipped the lid.

Nobody would run me because they didn't want to risk losing to the #1 medallion in Cambridge.

In the real world it was shown that inducing hot air trapped under the hood in average driving conditions reduces HP by about 5-6 percent over picking up air from in front of the radiator or inside the fenders…thus the ducting we typically see in all intakes today….

For you people who don't get it an engine is essentially a big air pump and the smoother and less restriction you can put on air flow the more power you make there are a lot of new guys out there that totally disregard old school engine building tricks like Port matching and when did trays
