Great recommendations and your passion for them really comes across! I've read all these except Vladivostock Circus but that sounds great and I like how unique you make it sound. I'll keep an eye out for it next time I'm in a bookstore. I'm also really looking forward to Baltasar's new book coming out later this year.

I recently got Minor Detail, and I can’t wait to read it! Paradais got my attention now too 👀
To you, I’d highly recommend The House in Smyrna, by Tatiana Salem Levy (a Brazilian book translated to English by Alison Entrekin) - about a woman whose grandfather was a Jewish Turkish immigrant to Brazil and whose mother was exhumed to Portugal during Brazil’s military dictatorship. Years later, after her mom’s death and the end of her very toxic relationship, she goes on a journey of self-discovery to both Turkey and Portugal. The writing is beautiful and powerful, almost (but not quite) stream of thought, interweaving the grandfather, the mother, and the main character (these last too are even at odds with each other at times). I think you’d really like this one!

If you enjoy historical fiction, my latest obsession has been Sofia Segovia with Simon Bruni translating her work from Spanish to English. Murmur of Bees (takes place in Mexico during influenza and the war for independence, multi pov following one family and a special boy) and The Tears of Amber (two German families trying to survive the rise of Hitler & ultimately come together) are what I’ve read so far. With those two books alone she might be a new fav!

I absolutely loved A Whole Life, even more than The Tobacconist. Paradais is next on my reading list but now I think I must find Minor Detail first.

I love Eva Baltasar's writing. I loved Boulder & Permafrost. I'm looking forward to Mamut. I recently read & enjoyed - Lean Your Loneliness Against Mine by Klara Hveberg, Woman at Point Zero by Nawal El Saadawi.

I’ve just reserved A Whole Life and Boulder from my library. Nice to see some books that perhaps don’t get the attention they deserve.

Great list of books!

However, as someone whose native language isn't English, I find it kind of strange that "translated fiction" is often seen as a genre in itself while actually it only means that there are authors who write in other languages, in all kind of genres. I'm glad that non-English speaking authors and translators are getting more attention by publishers and readers, though. Reading about diverse experiences of the human condition can only improve our living together, with respect and understanding.
That said, some author recommendations who write in my native German: Sasa Stanisic, Mareike Fallwickl, Christa Wolf ("kassandra")

Awesome list! I've read 2 of these (Melchor & Shibli) and agree they are must reads. I've also just finished I Who Have Never Known Men by Jacqueline Harpman/Ros Schwartz (translated from French) and highly recommend it if a literary/feminist/dystopian sounds like your thing. 5 stars from me!
