Canon EOS M Video Test

A 1080p video shot with the new Canon EOS M mirrorless digital camera at 29.97fps. Edited with Apple iMovie'11 and used Quicktime to compress a 896mb h264 video file at best quality. The Canon EOS M is paired with the new EF-M 22mm f/2 STM lens and uses a Senneheiser MKE400 shotgun microphone for audio capture.
The new Canon EOS M mirrorless digital camera is Canon's first entry into the competitive consumer market. The Canon EOS M features a CMOS APS-C sensor with DIGIC V processor to give DSLR like performance in a small point and shoot form factor with interchangeable lenses.
The video captured of the Canon EOS M mirrorless digital camera in the Canon EOS M Video Test was recorded with a Canon EOS Rebel T4i/650D paired with the EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS lens.

All my equipment used is listed in the description above. I became a pro because I got my foot in the door at a local television station working for pennies and worked my way up for years. Making good television makes good Youtube videos. Practice makes perfect. The best lens for the money for video is the Canon EF 40mm f.2.8 pancake lens for around $150.

Thanks Chad. I hadn't considered battery life yet so that's worth noting! I agree with you on the glass too, I borrowed some Canon L lenses recently and am really happy with the results straight out the camera.

As of right now on Amazon, the Canon EOS M with the EFM 18-55 STM lens is a great deal. The EOS M is basically a Rebel SL1 without an optical viewfinder but smaller. The EOS M kit lens is sharp with good color and contrast. The only drawback to the EOS M is the horrible battery life. You might want to get some spares if you plan to video tape yourself for your Youtube channel.

Currently, the EOS M is a great value and very capable of shooting your weekly videos.

The built in stereo microphones of the Canon EOS M sound just fine except when you bring it outside in the elements. With just a slight wind and camera noise from the AF or IS of the lens mechanics, the built in microphones pick up all that noise. The external mic with rubber mount isolates those noises.

The Canon EOS M like the Rebel T4i and the 5D Mark III has a HDMI output during video recording. The output maintains a 16x9 format but a lower resolution (maybe 1280x720p or even 854x480p) to keep all the camera info displayed as well. It is definitely a usable feature IMHO.

The built in camera microphones will definitely pick up the noise from the 22mm STM lens. You will need an external microphone with a isolating rubber mount.

Hi, I brought this camera yesterday, and I've been trying to film a video, but it films for about 20 seconds before it automatically stops recording, is something wrong with my camera, or SD card, or do I have it on the wrong settings? Thanks for your help

I have not tried the new firmware yet. I am not holding my breath on the performance and I am not expecting any miracles either. The recent EOS M deals are great and is very hard to pass up. You could just purchase from Amazon and return it in 30 days if you are not happy.

I manually focused this video. All my AF settings were disabled and just used the LCD to aid in critical focus.

I used the Standard Color Profile. I try to use a custom white balance to achieve a proper temperature for desired color.
